slow dgl-4500
« on: November 06, 2010, 06:05:13 AM »

you may remember, i posted a few weeks ago about connecting 2 xbox's to my 4500. Ive been using if for a few weeks now and ive had no problems with the open nat on the xbox's but its really slow when browsing web pages or downloading.
Ive been blaming my cable company, because, well, mostly, they deserve it, and we usually have to call them out every couple of months because our signal strength anyway.
last night, i moved back over to my linksys wrt54g and the difference is night and day. I tested a download, with the 4500 i was at several hundred K, the linksys jumped up to 1.3M which is what im used to seeing with this connection, web pages loaded much faster also.
I have a habit when google-ing just to open every link that interests me in a fresh tab, with 2 displays and 2 browser windows, its a lot of tabs loading at once, and the linksys is fine with it. with the 4500 i might as well grab a cup of coffee, waiting for 2 or 3 tabs to load takes forever.
Im also seeing my upload speed in the red while playing halo: reach on the xbox, which may or may not be a problem with the router(damn cable company again, lol)

I have upgraded my firmware since my first post, i went from 1.21NA to the most current (1.23 i think) and it hasnt helped at all.
I dont dislike the 4500, ive been kind of impressed with the setup but if i cant get this problem taken care of then im buying something else.

Without knowing your set up its hard to say, but if I had to guess you have all your bandwidth allocated to the 360 and your starving your other PC's of it. What are your Gaming Rules?

I have one xbox setup with a gaming rule using the setup from the sticky(since we have 2 xbox's here i only performed the section of the sticky below the Advanced/GameFuel title) but it wasnt even powered on while comparing router speeds.
is there an easy way to post my settings?

You could send one of us your saved configuration file and we could load it up here and take a look for you.

First off, how is everything connected? all wired or some wireless? Check all cabling and make sure it's new and in good condition. Is the slow browsing only on PCs and does it occur while the Xbox is on or off? Both?

Is the Primary and 2ndary DNS Ip addresses filled in in the Basic/Internet and Manual sections?

Have you set up static IPs for ALL connected devices to the 4500? It's recommended to do this for ALL devices. That way nothing changes and you can make it easy to manage this way. You don't have to set the PCs up in gamefuel at all, just the xboxes. I have 2 as well and they work great. I've only played once with them both on at the same time. Other than this, my other PCs work well while playing one xbox at times.

Let us know what you have. You could take screen captures of each page of the router and email them to one of us if you like.

well, im sorry to say, i have given up on my DGL, its been a bit of headache since i first connected it but nothing i couldnt deal with and ive been assuming that it was just a matter of dialing the thing in.

Saturday night i lost connecton, which hasnt been that unusual, Ive had to reboot the 4500 multiple times since ive had it but its a quick fix. I literally spent hours working on this and no matter what i tried, i could not get it back up. I even tried loading the factory defaults.
At one point i could renew the WAN settings and watched it obtain a new ip, i could even ping websites from the routers browser interface but none of my pc's could connect. However, i had no problems connecting directly to the modem with both my desktop and a company notebook(which had never been on this network before).
It seemed like every time i would reboot the router it would act just a little differently(I lost the ablilty to connect to almost all of the other devices/pc's  on my network at one point, even had an instance of being able to see a device from my pc when the router didnt show it as connected.

At this point, Im thinking that this particular unit has a problem, which could probably be taking care of with an exchange for the same model, but I dont want to risk going through this again.

If anyone is aware of a higher-end, reliable router thats worth checking out, please let me know.

I'd like to know if you have done a full factory reset after saving your current configuration to file and run some tests. Also make sure your logs are enabled then disable them during this short test period if you can. I heard that disabling them helps in some cases. I can't verify this as I've never done this. I'd also like for you to consider sending me your config file to see what you have loaded. Don't change anything, just save it as it sits now. Only think you could change is the Admin Password if you would to the default or something easy like 1234 or password. I'll send you my email address in a PM. Verify my the FW version you do have loaded now so I know that version. And refresh my memory on what ISP service you have, i.e. cable or dsl and that modem mfr and model # it is...will try and figure this out if we can.

Sorry about that, Ive had a lot going on this week, I was here earlier today, and ended up getting distracted with work. I really do appreciate you putting in this much effort to help, offering to load my config seems huge.
After reading your post and pm, I decided to start from scratch(it was needed anyway), I disconnected my router and switches, ive got 3 Dlink DGS-2208 switches connected now, one in my living room connected to a htpc, ps3, xbox360 and two in this room connecting a few pc's, another 360, 3 Nas drives, a printer, and some misc devices.
Im not a big fan of wireless, but there are a couple of ipod's, a wii and a few laptops that connect using wireless G.

Ive labeled the cables on each end and ran everything neatly to avoid any confusion. The only connections at the router are the switches and the modem, and i setup the two switches in this room so that all my important devices were on one and the stuff i can live without on another. I figured that this way, i could easily swap out one router for another and, if need be, just connect one switch for testing.
This all went fine, I reset the modem to factory settings, and made the basic security changes to get up and running. I planned to take my time reserving dhcp addy's and to group them by device catagory; desktop, storage, etc. and eventually to go through the list making everything I could static, as you advised.

This all seemed to be going fine, I didnt have any connection issues to speak of, spent some time on xbox live and the only thing i noticed is that Halo: Reach listed my upload speed in the red but Ive seen that with both routers and my isp kind of sucks.

I went back later to add more reserved ip's, got 7 or 8 done and found that i had devices connected that werent showing up in the device list, the xbox in the living room was powered down, the other one was up and i could see if from my pc but the router didnt show it as connected(both xbox's have unique Host names and i hadnt done anything with the gamefuel setup).

Then the ps3 didnt show up in the list when it was powered on. My wife and a friend were watching tv in the living room and i didnt want to bother them again so i didnt flip over to it to check its connection. The htpc is on the same switch, i could still get into if from this room and see it in the device list in the router so i knew the switch was working and connected. At some point during this i lost my internet connection and at first just assumed it was the damn cable company again and stayed focused on the local network.

I worked my way through the routers menu's, couldnt find anything that stood out and several hard and soft reboots hadnt helped. i had copied and pasted the reserved ip's to a txt file and was getting pretty frustrated so i started deleting devices and disconnecting them thinking that maybe i had hit some kind of limit to either the amount of connections or the number of reserved dhcp ip's.
This didnt help and was getting a little irate so i decided to make sure i could get online and quit for a while, but i couldnt.
I ran it through quite a few hard reboots, noticing different problems each time, sometimes i could ping websites from the router, other times i couldn't, sometimes my pc's would obtain dns server info, sometimes they wouldnt, although i was never able to load a webpage.
I tried unplugging the modem and router and leaving them that way for a while but it didnt make a difference so I did a full factory reset and still couldnt connect with only this pc on to the router. The connection was great if i bypassed the router and connected directly to the modem with this pc so i brought my company laptop in and it was fine aswell (different mac address).

This was my limit, so I switched to my linksys router, i did have issues getting it connected but to be honest, id done so much, my memorys pretty blurred, it did eventually connect and has worked since, even with connecting all of my devices and reserving ip's.

Ive already RMA'ed the 4500 for a refund and ive calmed down so ive been looking around for a replacement but theres not much of a selection and nothing that seems to compare feature-wise. i was considering buying a lower model Dlink, but you must be pretty confident in yours if your willing to load my saved config so what do you think? have i missed something? Im definately not an expert when it comes to networking. If you think its worth a try and are willing to continue helping then ill buy another, maybe ill learn something.

sorry, i feel like ive written a book, i didnt plan to get this detailed when i started typing :)

wow, sounds like it...well, certainly willing to take a look at your saved config file and see if I see anything that stands out. Like to make sure everything is set up well for you. I really do enjoy these routers. Been the best one I've had. Let me know if you want to. Open to help you out. Also wish you could send me the router too. LOL. I know you've started the return process.

Also let me know what version of firmware that was loaded on the router if you can. I want to replicate the same FW version.
