drive bay weirdness
« on: November 12, 2010, 02:40:15 PM »

I think that my bay 1 will not work right with 2 tb drives, but bay 2 is OK.

Details:
I've had a dns-323 for about 18 months.  I had 2x1tb wd10eads for most of the time, with no problems, but recently I upgraded to 2x2 tb wd20eads drives.  After about a month, bay 1 got weird - the drive in it would not mount easily, and it failed the scan.  I swapped the drives as a test, and discovered that the drive in bay 1 always failed the scan after a minute or so, and the drive in bay 2 passed, so it was clearly the bay that had gone bad.  Fortunately, I can still get data off either bay.

Then, I put in an old 1tb drive in bay 1, and the scan test is working fine!

Any ideas what this means?

There should be no difference between the connections.  I would guess that you have a physical connection issue.

Here is another weirdness:
I have a 1 tb in the right bay, but the DNS-323 calls it volume_2.
I have a 2 tb drive in the left bay, and the dns calls it volume_1

This is in standard format.  firmware 1.09, fresh install, factory reset.

You would expect it to be the other way around, wouldn't you?

To repeat, the dns-323 calls the 1tb in the right bay volume_2.

Here is the status page:

For starters when looking at the 323 from the front, the right bay is HDD1 and left is HDD2 (reveresed from what you'd expect) which might explain your findings.
