Cannot Connect Second Computer
« on: November 14, 2010, 12:40:29 PM »

A couple of years ago I purchased a DIR-615, hoping to set up a wireless network in my apartment.  Unfortunately, the cable modem had a very low-quality signal and the router could not transmit through two solid concrete walls, so I disconnected it and went with a Sprint Sierra Wireless card.

I finally was able to get the ISP to replace my cable and the new modem has a good signal.  I also drilled through the walls and ran an ethernet cable back to my computer.

Finally, I  pulled the DIR-615 out of mothballs and connected it to the new cable modem.  When I removed the ethernet cable from the computer and connected it to the DIR-615, and then ran another ethernet cable from the DIR-615 to the computer, it popped right up and everything worked perfectly.

I then ran a second ethernet cable from my wife's computer to the router.  At this point everything came to a halt.  Her computer does not see the router and I cannot figure out how to install it.  I tried D-Link's FAQ's, but could find nothing about connecting a second computer to the router (by cable).  Likewise the manual.  I assume it must be a simple project, since it has to be the first step in creating a network, but it is beyond me.

Couple of things to check with basic trouble shooting. If you can move the computer, try using the known good cable from your computer, to connect your wife's system. If it works, it's the second cable. If not, the problem is with the setup on your wife's computer.

In that case, I'd try to get into the network settings on your wife's computer and see if dhcp is enabled. If it isn't, enable dhcp, and see if you connect.

I assume you are running some form of windows. dhcp is often called "get address automatically" or similar in the network settings. Also, if you open up a command prompt, and type ipconfig /all, you will get a list of info as to what network connections you have, and what the computer thinks it is connected to. That will give you a start as to where the problem is.

Hope some of that helps!

Hi Araponga,

What operating system is being used on both computers?

Are you online via the Router, or going through the Cable Modem?

I am running Win 7 on this computer, Win XP Pro on the other.

This one is connected to the internet by ethernet cable to a cable modem.  For a short while (I believe) it was connected by ethernet cable to the DIR-615 and then to the internet through the cable modem.

When I got the DIR-615 configured (I had to do it manually, the wizard would not clone the mac address), I could connect to the local network (the one I set up on the router) with great signal strength.  However, it showed no internet access.  I tried a cable from the router to the computer and got the same result.  When I ran the ethernet cable from the modem to the computer, I was back on line.

I assume that in configuring the modem manually I missed some important step, like "enable internet access,"  but I don't have any idea what, if anything, it was.  I do remember skipping the first page on the configuration menu because I did not understand anything on it and decided to leave everything as default.  I did set a new admin password and passphrase, and I typed in the mac address, since that was the reason for configuring manually.

I have reset the modem to initial default settings while waiting to try again.

Hi Araponga,

Hook up the Dir-615 Router to the Cable Modem again. Hook up the Computer to the Router.
Unplug the Cable Modem. Remove power for about one minute. Not sure how long it should be for, but play it safe. Then now restore Power to the Cable Modem.

Do a Factory Reset with the current setup. Hold the button in for about 20 seconds and release.

Now the Windows 7 Computer should be online. Go into Windows 7's Network and Sharing Center and configure it. It can block any other computer from accessing the Internet.

Go to your wife's Computer. Make sure that it is plugged into the Router, unless running Wirelessly.
Go to the Properties of the Local Area Connection.
Scroll down until you see Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Highlight it. Click Properties.
Make sure that everything is dotted to do everything Automatically.
Reboot the computer and it should be online.

Thanks for all the advice.  Unfortunately, the situation remains unchanged.  When I got to the "Windows 7 computer should be on line," it wasn't.  It sees only the router.  There is still an "X" in the diagram between the router and the internet.  When I tried to configure the router through Windows I got a message that it might take up to 90 seconds for windows to find the unconfigured devices on the network.  I gave it ten minutes - nothing.

I am going to call my ISP to see if they have any tips, then I guess I will have to call one of the local network gurus.

Hi Araponga,

I know that this might be a long shot, but try disabling IPV6. Maybe your current Router or the Modem can't handle IPV6 that Windows 7 has the option of using.

November 23, 2010 Adding:

Check the Software Firewall on your 7 Computer and make sure that it isn't being lockdowned, by it, by accident.
