Hi!

I recently installed my brand new DGL, upgraded the firmware, did all that stuff.

And now, its giving me a **** load of issues.  The internet will simply drop out for periods of about a minute, spaced maybe 15 minutes to an hour apart.  Usually, I have about 4 computers and an xbox connected to the router or to my second DGL downstairs, which I have acting as an access point.  

When connection picks up, I notice the drops more frequently.  For example, if I am playing SC2 on my laptop, and my brother is playing Halo or COD on the Xbox, we will both lose connection more often than say, I am just doing light internet browsing.

These drops are not just based on the computer on my network -- everything connected goes down at the same time, regardless of manufacturer, etc.



To save you some time, let me check a few key points off.

-Im on an uncapped 50+ mbps connection via Comcast cable, with a Cisco DOCSIS 3.0 Modem.
-My cable does have a few splitters on it, but it appears to be connected properly.
-When my connection is working, it works fine.
-I do have gamefuel and Gaming rules set up, but the problem occurs regardless of them being on /off.
-I get full signal strength, so that is most definitely not an issue.
-When I check the logs after a drop, everything seems pretty normal - last time is just was reassigning IP's to everything on the network.  Other than that, nothing out of the ordinary.
-Uptime DOES NOT change after a drop, so the router is not rebooting.
-Router firmware is up to date.
-Running WPA 2 w/ Anti-Spoof


This is really pissing me off, and I lost LOADS of games because of it.  I notice a lot of users of this specific router have the same problem.  Any solutions guys?

what version of FW is currently loaded? If you have splitters on the cable line, does the Cable modem report any disconnects during this time frame that your disconnected by chance? Check the logs from the cable modem and make sure you aren't seeing any disconnects there. If you are then your problem lies on the WAN side of the cable modem.

If not, review the gaming and gamefuel sticky. Those instructions work well as I use them on my system accept for the wireless gaming. I'm wired all the way for gaming.

v1.21 FW was the only version that had issues with hang and have random reboots on the router.

Save off your configuration to file then do a full factory reset and don't change anything, run at factory settings and see if you see any issues.

Running the latest -- 1.23 I believe.

Do you think you could explain how to check my modems logs?  Its leased and was installed by Comcast, so I don't have any documentation. 

I'll try a full reset tomorrow.

Your cable modem also has an IP address, you could try 192.168.100.1 in a browser and see if you get it's web page. Do a search on the internet for your model and see if there is some information for it.

If your on v1.23, this is a good and stable FW version.

Are there any log entries in the 4500 router logs regarding disconnections?

I agree with Furry.  Try to log into your cable modem's web  page.  I have a scientific Atlanta an its ip is 192.168.100.1.  I too was suffering from constant drops to the point were you could not watch netflix or go on xbox live.  For the longest time I blamed the router and after connecting to the modem I found it was the modem the one responsible for all the dropped connections. It took Brighthouse two trips to figure out there was a problem on a pole in our neighborhood.  At one point they replaced the modem and the problem surfaced again 15 mins after the technician left my home.

Alright -- I'm gonna give my ISP a call soon.  This is as annoying as can be.

I did get my Modems page, but I need a user + pass to log in, and I dont have that info.  Should I try calling my ISP for that too?

Also, the guy who installed it originally had been to our house so many times to fix the thing due to all this BS with us having a static modem and comcast not offering static anymore blah blah blah, that he decided not to cap the modem, which was probably brand new.

If they get sent out, will they cap it?  I really like my 50+ mbps service, because I can game on my desktop and my brother on the xbox simultaneously without significant lag.  However, if they cap it back down to the 20mbps I'm paying for, laggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg.

You need to ask them not to cap it if you paying for 50Mb down then you should be getting it. If your not paying for it then they might have an issue. LOL. You should be getting what you pay for. Look at your package that you have from them.

Yes they should have the user name and password so you can at least look at the logs. IF they won't do that then I would get your own cable modem.

I'm on a 10Mb connection and I can game while my roomie works from his office at home and has a VPN and his home pc going at the same time. I've only tried it once however I did game with 2 xboxes at the same time and didn't have any issues. I know it works well. Just need to make sure that the signal coming into the cable modem is strong and stable, after that the 4500 will do the rest.

If your getting crap in, you'll get crap out from the modem into the 4500 router and it will look like it's the routers fault. The router is trying to do the best it can however if the signal and data isn't good, the router can't give you a 100%. Let us know how it goes.
