Connecting the DNS323 to an audio system
« on: November 14, 2010, 06:05:12 PM »

What are my options if I need to connect the DNS323 to a stereo system? I have been searching the Net for suggestion but am not very clear. I do not want play the media from the NAS on a TV - I just want to play my music on a stereo system.

Thanks

You need a media player, you can't connect an Ethernet device directly to your audio system, unless it's a very unusual audio system! :)

There are stereo systems which have LAN connectivity (wired, wireless) such as Logitech's SqueezeBox or Sonos' products.
I don't know if they play nice (pun intended) with the DNS-323.

Thanks guys. I was just wondering if anyone in this forum has had any good experience connecting the NAS to the audio system via a media player?

On another note, I was looking at the Onkyo systems and some of their high end amplifiers do have ethernet port. And yes, I found the Sonos also have ethernet ports and wireless speakers for a multi room environment.

If you have an iPod/iPhone you could buy a docking station for it and run an app like SMB music to stream your media from your NAS.

Personally, I've got a media streamer connected to the TV. We don't have a stereo system and instead use the 5.1 surround.

I think what you need is something like a D-LINK DSM-520 or a D-Link DSM-750...

Richlink the 323 does this job very very well with absolutely no problems and not using the built in i-tunes server either

A regular stereo system needs some if not all of the following:

1. Composite Audio/Video;
2. Optical Digital Audio;
3. Coax Digital Audio;
4. HDMI;
5. Component Video;
6. S-Video.

And DNS323 doesn't have ANY of these...

How are you going to connect the stereo system to DNS323 without anything in the middle?

Thanks for all your inputs. I think I need a "box" with one of the I/Os that RichLink mentioned PLUS a LAN and it must also have a uPNP client. I found that some of the Onkyo receivers (e.g. NR708) have an Ethernet input. But they can get a bit pricey when looking to configure a system.

I was hoping one of the media players could act as an interface between the 323 and my audio system without the need for a TV or a PC. :(

Now this sounds promising. So will the Airport Express connect to the iTunes server on the 323? Or do I need to have my PC on to use the Airport Express?

Catre :

i personally dont like itunes thats why i use MediaMonkey i find its a lot faster for my 90,000 song collection the nice thing about the airport express is that you can have a few of them in the house with powered speakers at each one and with your ipod or iphone and the remote app you can select which speakers to send music to. I find the itunes server on 323 to be very slow and not easy to work with another good thing about the airport express is that it acts as a wireless extender.

Simply make a folder in the 323 use media monkey on a laptop get the remote speakers plugin for MediaMonkey close the Laptop and use an ipod to control the music simple works great direct music to the basement, deck, upstairs or in the garage. I hve 90K in music and itunes just cant handle it nor can the itunes server on the 323
