Hi guys. I had no idea dlink has a forum.. heh

I've installed a hitachi 250GB (5400RPM) drive in the router, and I agree with you all, the noise is ridiculous...

I was considering cutting out the back and remove the tiny fan and then use a lowRPM 80mm fan instead. It would void my warranty, but I thought it would be worth it. But before I did it such a silly thing, I connected an Antec 80mm case fan that was wasting space on my desk to a 5V power adaptor. I then placed it at an angle behind the router, blowing onto the HDD-bay and back of the router... I haven't heard the fan spin up even once since then, no warranty void necessary.  

(I guess you'd want to keep the drive bay open for a drive generating more heat.)

The work around is good to know. As long as the noise of the 80mm fan is low, it's cool.
Like I said before, this router thermal design is messed up. It would be great if D-link add another fan on the top left. That probably would meet the cooling requirement needed for the heat generated by the drive.

I don't know if it's technically feasible to add another fan as it depends on the electronics inside it. But then there is always a way for a new h/w version which D-link is known releasing time to time. Not sure how popular and business D-link is getting from this router sell, but new h/w version release will depend on it.

This issue hits a lot because you pay that hefty amount to buy it and then have to deal with it without absolutely no viable technical solution from D-link so far. It's over 2 years since this router was released, I bet many might have complained about this issue to them but yeah who cares? yeah..

I agree, this unit should had better cooling out of the gate for the cost. I would definitely use any warranty time left with DLink on these units. After that, I would make your own modifications for cooling.

D-link I have discussed the problem with the loud fan in the dir-685. D-Link has no intention to alleviate the problem. I was even told I only had to turn back and fan ... f*** up! This is Euro 219 and router and what you get in return is pure junk and rubbish.

 I am going to court because I'm sure that right and will say that this amount something more may be expected.

i agree with you...
again, to solve this there are several solutions...
a) if you donīt want to modify anything on the case just buy a ssd, the cheapest you can find...
b) if you are a hobbyst (and your router is over the warranty period) you could cut a hole in the back of the case and add a fan conected to the electronic of the router...
c) if you have a friend who knows about electronic you can do everything...

cut off a openning in the case and install this, it will work of sure...

Okay, I received the replacement through RMA. The issue still exists, no surprise though. The noise started as soon as I started using the internal drive. The temperature shown was 48C/118F at the time.

Currently it has 1.01NA firmware. Checking the new version gave firmware with file name
"dir685_v2.00NA_B01_RBa3ah.bin" dated 2010-9-14

Is this the same as 2.00NA available on the D-link website?

Does anyone know the specs of the internal fan?

i have called d-link and rma this crappy router. I know that i get back en new one with the same problemens, bud d-link has no other solution than rma it..and rma it...and again rma it...

come on d-link... do something about this crappy fan en firmware

Is there anyone using  Hitachi drives with Model number starting HTE i.e. Enhanced-availability (EA) model in this router?

If yes, did you observe the noisy fan issue as well?

I tried a western digital scorpio 320 gb. The noise is indeed ridiculous. It doesnt happen only when the drive is being accessed. It also happens if the room temperature goes above 71F. I am comfortable all the way up to 73F in my room and I dont like the idea of having the AC on just so my router "feels" comfortable and doesnt overheat. The only thing I could do is take the hard drive out for now until /I find some setup to keep it cool. I tried using a laptop cooler base I had that is usb powered and powered off the router which worked up to 73F. Before the fan would go on and off even at temperatures of 68F in the room. It has a crappy fan and I doubt that any firmware would fix this.

The SSD someone mentioned might be helpful since the have lowere temperatures, but im ot sure shelling out another 90 bucks is the solution. It also sucks because if I use the hard drive as usb that would help with the heating, it is not accessible through nas unless i use shareport which basically makes it useless for the xbox etc...
