DIR 655 frustration please help me relieve some stress
« on: November 19, 2010, 12:28:13 PM »

Hello community for the past 5 stressful hours I've been reading about network connections/systems & all other kinds of helpful forums and sites. I've been having serious trouble with my Xbox 360 and I believe there are some ports inside of the router that i'm using right now that are blocking me from playing. What I have to do is go in DMZ with my Xbox, following a series amount of steps to fix this problem. Basically i'm stuck at how i'm suppose to open the program/router on my laptop so I can do the port forwarding & add all the extra ports that I need in order to play. I've found my IP Address of my router and typed it into my server browser and it sent me to the D-Link website where I have the name/password page. I don't know the password to the model type or w.e it is im putting my password to. I've tried to use the D-Link Support page of trying to turn off the firewall but unfortunately its only for the XP version and I've tried to use it but it lead me to a dead-end. So i'm really dazed and stressed about this problem. I'm still trying to fix it but i'm all of the place now. I was wondering if anyone could help me out on this problem.

For any more additional informayion please ask and I would be more then happy to add into the details.

Just wondering ftf (for the fact) port forwarding and disabling FW & security features are done on the laptop/desktop ? because that is what I believe what im trying to do now. Is get into/login my router to do all of the other steps ... right ?

Here's a website of what I should be doing

Thanks in advance

OK I've made some progress after going through another long stressful hour of just guessing and looking the firewall options and looking at my Network Connection Details and I noticed something familiar. The IPv4 Default Gateway in the details tab. Recently when I was cruising on the Control Panel I took a quick look through my 'Network Map' & it caught my attention. My order goes Globe > Gateway > D - Link System > ? > My Laptop.

So instead of giving my first routers IP address into the browser I gave the IP Address of the Gateway and guessed the password and it worked. So i'm in the gigafast website and now it opens me a bunch of options and I hope that these options will cause more good then harm.

Major,

I have the same router and use 2 XBOX 360's to connect to XBOX Live without issues.  What is specifically occurring that you think you need to have your XB in the DMZ or specially setup?

it all started off with going to the CoD Forums which lead me to the Activation website

https://activision.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/activision.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=28994&p_created=1289275249&p_sid=CNvEIrfk&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_srch=1&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MTAxMDUsMTAxMDUmcF9wcm9kcz0wJnBfY2F0cz0mcF9wdj0mcF9jdj0mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9ubCZwX3BhZ2U9MQ!!&p_li=&p_topview=1

I thought it could be the ports that are blocked cause I kept getting an error online in the game. And it tells me that I need to go to the website blah blah blah the error message is in the link above. So then I started researching about post forwarding, static ip'ing & dmz and I got to this website

A series amount of steps to get my 360 into DMZ

http://www.seasonedgamers.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=21472&st=0

Right now I was just putting in my static ip address, but I got another problem saying Destination IP add can't be the same subnet as WAN OR LAN IP add, please input another so im completely confused.

To make sure were on the same page this is my router
http://www.dlink.ca/products/?pid=DGS-1005D

yet when I go Control Panel > Network & Internet > View Network Computers & Devices > then right click the router Xtreme N Gigabit Router > Properties I See model number DIR 655 so i'm wondering if I got confused there

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alright I skipped the Static IP'ing because I don't fully understand the terminology and concept, so I just went to the Forwarding tab inside of the gigafast website and i'm adding the extra ports that need to be opened.. The ones I already have listed are the DNS Servers IP'd, so i'm wondering If I add the routers last digit's or the xbox's

To have a static IP with the router in the network just reserve the IP the router is giving your device or just specify one within your DHCP scope.

Setting > Network Settings > Add DHCP Reservation

Setting > Network Settings > Add DHCP Reservation

What device would you be talking about?

One thing that I think that interferes my progress of fixing the problem is- I'm used the gateway's IP to get into the router or w.e that is. I didn't use the D-Link's IP because I tried to use it but I have no idea what the password is for the D-Link server. So I believe doing all these steps such as port forwarding is a waste of time because i'm not doing it correctly ? O boy i'm sooooo confused i've completely hit a wall.

Here's how it goes one more time Globe > Gateway > D-Link > ? > Laptop/Xbox

I used the Gateway's ip not the D-Link's.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Right now I just went back to the gigafast site and the option DMZ was available & I changed a couple of settings such as enabling the DHCP. Once I apply these settings. It will take effect on the the Gateway itself right ... how about the d-link router itself will I need to do the same process to the router aswell ?

Yep I saw that part and it looks crucial. I already rebooted my router. Here's what I did be4 my reboot added the ports to the Virtual Server's the XBL/CoD ones that I need to play. I enabled the DCHP Server which was what I initially thought you were talking about but I didn't add the reservation. And then I had to switch the security remote management, because one of the ports I had to port was 80. And then I enabled the DMZ and I added my xbox's IP. Thats it so far.

All I would like to know now is which MAC address I need to use and which IP I should use for the reservation the router or the xbox's

The MAC address and IP address used in the reservation is the XBox's. To get into the router setup you simply put the router's IP address into your browser "either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1) user ID will be admin and password by default will be blank. You would then go into the Setup tab on the left side menu Network Settings. You will see a "add a DHCP reservation" about 1/2 way down the page. You can manually input the device name, IP address and MAC address there or you can use the drop down menu if your device is listed there. This will cause your router to request a reboot. Do so and test your connection to see if that solved your issue.
