baby steps RAID1 Vol 1 / Vol 1-1
« on: November 25, 2010, 10:24:36 PM »

Taking baby steps here. This is my first network storage attempt and also my first time with RAID1. I had to have tech support get me set up. So this is what I got. Under my Network Folder I have 3 sub folders Volume_1, Volumn_1-1, and Web_Page. Does this sound correct for RAID1 config? I already moved some file to Vol_1 and I find they also show up on Vol_1-1. Is that hows it suppose to work? If so does it matter which drive I do all the moving and coping to or from? It's confusing having both to look at so what do all you do?

What is the Web_Page fold all about?

Plus, I was reading some past posts about accessing from the internet and OMG looks like it will be the nightmare from hell if I even try to go through with setting that up.

Thanks,

Hi there

First of all "web_page" is just a built in share that shows up on the 323. It contains a link to the D-Link website, so don't worry about that.

Secondly, you should only see one "Volume" (Volume_1). If you have a "Volume_1" and a "Volume_1-1" you have created another share within the NAS's web interface to the same location, which is why you see your file under both shares. This has nothing to do with the fact you are running in a RAID-1 setup. RAID-1 simply means your data is duplicated over two disks, but the NAS will only give you access to one of them. Should either drive fail, the other will take over automatically.

That makes much more sense. I kinda had the feeling that the (1-1) was a double. I guess I need to go into there and delete one of the entries. I will see if I can do that.

Thanks

Thanks jamieburchell. I was able to go into configuration advanced tab and delete the (Vol 1-1) entry. Probably during my session with tech support on the phone I followed their instructions twice by mistake.  My next task will be to set up my 2nd computer and see if I can access the DNS-321 with it through the wireless router. Then further down the line will be the ultimate FTP via internet offsite.

Here's some pointers on setting up FTP from the DNS-323 section. The same should apply to the 321.
