Just a quick question...


When replacing a drive under Raid-1, how do I manually tell it to rebuild the mirror? (Note: Replacement drive is the same size as the one being pulled, I'm not trying to increase or mismatch anything.)

Out of habit, when I first set things up, I disabled the auto-rebuild function. I typically prefer not to have anything set to do something automatically (that usually causes more problems than the convenience merits), but in this instance it probably would have been wiser to leave it on.

On or off it actually makes no difference in the replacement of a failed drive, and there is no way to manually tell the system to rebuild the mirror when replacing a drive.

The steps are ...

1 - power the system off
2 - remove & replace the failed drive
3 - power the system on and log into the web admin page
4 - accept the prompt to format the new drive

when the unit completes the format it will prompt for a reboot and will sync the drives after the reboot.

One last thing - it's a good idea to have a backup before you start this process.

It's funny, I asked this question about 1.5 years ago on this forum, but if one of my raid 1 drive fails right now, I wouldn't know what to do.

First of all, how do I know which drive will fail? I guess if it fails, I better back it up first then try to resync.

So my general idea of how to do this is as follows.

1. I somehow have to figure out which drive has failed (right or left side)
2. back up the data
3. power off (is this necessary?)
4. remove the failed drive
5. replace with a formatted new drive (does it have to be the same model or make or equal size? Can it just be a bigger HD?
6. boot up.

Now I don't know what happens here.  You mention it will ask me to format it? you mean when I log into the UI? I thought you just go in and manual rebuild it by hitting the [manual rebuild] button.

It has to format the drive with linux filesystems.  I don't think it will accept an already formatted drive - but I am unsure as I have not tried it.
