messed up Raid1
« on: December 01, 2010, 06:05:05 AM »

Hey everyone!

I'm running my DNS 323 (firmware 1.07) for more than a year now and I was pretty happy so far.
I set up a Raid1 with two Seagate 1TB drives.

Only recently it started behaving weirdly.
example: I deleted a folder with several subfolders and files. After deleting, the subfolders and some (!) of the files were still there. Every time I refresh it shows something different. Once it lists two files in a subfolder, next time none, next time only one and then back to two, ... Also when I tried to delete these folders/files again I got "No such file or directory".

The troubles are getting more and more.

I made copies of all the files on the NAS on my local harddrive when I encountered the first problems. But now I see that the list of files in several folders on the NAS is not the same as in those I copied to my Desktop. Often I have more files in the copy than in the original on the NAS, but some files are missing in the copy.

Many files and folders on the NAS don't show up at all anymore now.

My idea was to copy all data from the NAS, format it and then copy it back. But now it turned out, as mentioned before, that I wasn't able to copy all the files. I'm a bit lost now.

I had a friend telling me that this was probably a problem of the raid-controller but I don't know enough about it really.

Does anyone have ideas? What would you do?

There is no "RAID controller" per se in the DNS-323, it's software RAID, all RAID processing, which isn't anything much - it's RAID1 so, it's essentially nothing more complex than a duplicated write.

What would I do?  Reformat & restore from my backup.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

Thanks for the reply!

OK, so all software RAID. alright.

Do you know if there is any way to get back the data that I don't have in my backup and that doesn't show up anymore on the NAS?

Any idea what the reason for these problems could be, to avoid them from now on? Maybe powercuts?

You could try running the scandisk tool from the web interface menu which is available in firmware version 1.08.

You could also try attaching the drives to your computer and running manufactures diagnostics on them. This may tell you if the drives have problems.

Removing them and trying to read them (and run diagnostics) on each SEPERATELY soulds like the best idea. If only one has gone bad, then you should be able to get the info off the good one. It is entirely possible that the system is trying to compensate for a bad disk thus providing intermittent results. I'd break the raid pairing in this cases ASAP. The longer you wait to try and get the data, the more it is at risk.
