Several basic questions about the DNS-321
« on: December 03, 2010, 08:40:41 PM »

I grabbed one of this for $79 w/ $20 MIR, and two 2TB HDD at $55 each during Thanksgiving sales, I just recevied all parts and put everything together.  The drives are configured as RAID1 because I had terrible experience due to HDD failure and I want my data mirrored on two drives.

Several questions about this deviec:

Q1. If one hard drive had failed, how does it notify me?  I did not find anywhere in the web interface to input my email address or contact info.

Q2.  Is there any technology to recover files that were accidentlly deleted?  As I tested, files / folders  deleted from the NAS do not appear in Recycle Bin.

Q3. Is there any technology which supports shawdow copy / snapshot of data stored in this device?  For example when I like to get older version of a file?

Q4. Is there any tool to backup data on my local HDD to the NAS automatically?

I don't own one yet, but I think I can help...

Q1: it should email you if you have it setup to do so.
Q2: if you were to avoid using a RAID 1 setup and rather install fun_plug, you should be able to create script that will automatically copy/backup files from one drive to the other, each night.  This would take care of your accidental deletes and many other scenarios.
Q3: see Q2
Q4: I'm not sure.  I think there is something available once you have fun_plug installed.  But I don't know.

I could be completely wrong, but I think this is the preferred way.

I'm a newbie... what is fun_plug and where can I find it?  Is it better that the DiskClone Pro backup s/w that comes with the NAS?

In the web interface go to Configurations, then the Tools tab and Email alerts on the sidebar.  Set up with your account details and the smtp server your ISP uses for your email.

Not that I know of, nor would I rely on having one!

Depends just what you mean.  I have one of my DNS-321 boxes configured with two separate drives, set up with automated rotating rsync snapshot backups from one drive to the other at set times (but this is using Fonz fun_plug and some simple scripts to run the backups).  I don't use Windows enough to know if there is easy Windows-based software to do this between separate devices under control from a program on your desktop.

Yes, lots of them.  I believe Win 7 and XP Pro have Backup built in with ability to do automatic network backups, but again, I use Windows very rarely.  I've not opened the DiskClone Pro but I'd suspect it might just do it  :)

fun_plug is a text file that sits on the root of Volume_1 of your NAS. When the NAS boots, it executes any commands within that file. Because of this, it has allowed third party scripts and tools to run on the NAS. The most popular of which is Fonz Fun Plug (FFP). Modifications like this are totally unsupported by DLink. That said, with proper backups of your files and a bit of caution and know-how it's quite safe.
Google Fonz Fun Plug for more info.

Out of the box, you can use backup tools to backup to the NAS without these modifications. I use Robocopy, which comes with Windows Vista and above and available to install on XP. SyncToy is another free Microsoft offering.

If a drive fails, you will get an email if it is configured to do so. The drive light will also change colour.

A recycle bin facility does not exist. Nor does a versioning system.
