Set fixed ip address?
« on: December 08, 2010, 06:54:46 AM »

I'm not sure setting a fixed ip address is the best way to resolve my problem but would appreciate a few pointers.  I mapped the 321 to a drive letter, but it appears to lose the correct ip address occasionally, I assume because the DHCP server on my router is dynamically assigning ip addresses but the map is set to whatever ip address was current when I mapped the 321.  So I think I need to set a fixed IP address but I'm not sure.  In any case, I'm not sure how to determine what fixed ip address I can use and whether or not if I do configure one I need to configure anything else other than the address in the 321 configuration web interface.

For the record, I am using a cable isp.

Any help to this newbie would be appreciated. - Thanks

First, You are the master of Your LAN.  You can do as You please on You LAN, and there are a
number of ways to go about this.  You are very likely using a private subnet (i.e. 10.x.x.x, 172.16-31.x.x, or 192.168.x.x). You router will likely allow You to set a defined/static IP Address to be handed Your NAS based on it’s MAC address.

Its what I do.  I setup things like My NAS, Printer, and VOIP to have a stable IP Address.
Hope this helps
