Firmware Update?
« on: December 10, 2010, 04:26:57 PM »

I have an A1 with fw1.0.  Things have been working fine since I purchased it a few years ago but lately I'm having issues with it.  Here is my setup:

Windows 7 64 pro
Intel Core2Duo 3.33 OC'd 4.15
Comcast Cable modem with 20mb service
Dlink 4500
Dlink 2205 switch
(2) WDTV live Plus
(1) Xbox 360
(2) Xbox Originals (no gamerfuel or rules setup for these)
Gamerfuel from the sticky setup from this site.

Lately I have been getting connection interuptions while playing COD and now when I look at the staus of my router I cannot see who is logged onto it.  i.e. iPhones, Wii etc. etc.  Also, I cannot see LAN logins.

I've done a master reset with the router and still cannot get my status info to appear.  Confirmed it wasn't my service with a speedtest.  Is it time to upgrade firmware?  I am really affraid to.

Are you using default settings all this time?

Keep the current loaded FW for now and lets see if we can resolve the issue first.

What Wireless modes are you using?
Does the unit seem to exhibit the same problems with out the 2205 switch connected?

How are the game consoles set up, wired or wireless?

I presume that connecting the xbox directly to the cable modem doesn't exhibit this issue? Have you played for a while directly connected yet?

I would shut off everything accept one wired game console and one wired PC and do some testing. Turn off wireless radios in all the phones too.

Are there any other wireless routers in the area? Might be some interference.

Thanks for the reply, sorry its been so long.  I've been out on business.  To answer your questions:

Xbox's are wired.  Only the 360 is setup for fuel.
WDTV's are wired.

I scanned the WIFI's around me and seen channel 7 was my best shot (5 & 9 are the next closest channels)

I have 3 iPhones, wii & 2 laptops connected to the wifi.  (G is only turned on at the moment, seems to be most stable)

When 360 is connected direct to cable modem (comcrap) I have no issues. (18meg service)
Then I also put the switch in line and had no issues.

I am really big into XboxLive.  I would really like to figure this out.  It seems when I reset its okay for a day or so.  but after a while it starts flaking out.  For work, When i'm connected to VPN through my wifi, it seems connection is slow.  When I connect to VPN wired its fine.

Again, I still cannot see who is logged onto my router, so I cannot see how many things are hooked up to it.  I do have a WEP password, so I have a pretty good idea what connected but I'd like to see the activity.

It seems your pretty happy with yours so hopefully we can figure this out.

Thanks!

"I have 3 iPhones, wii & 2 laptops connected to the wifi.  (G is only turned on at the moment, seems to be most stable)"

Have you set up static IP reservations for ALL of your devices? Been known that iPhones causing some odd behavior on these routers. I've set up my entire system with Static IP addressing so I know whos who and whos got what and makes it easier to troubleshoot. I would turn off ALL devices and bring the up one at a time and add them. You can pick any order you like.

Just review the Gaming and Gamefuel sticky to make sure all settings are correct and with out any typos.
Make sure your not using the Gaming option, just the Game fuel rule.

I have 2 xboxes and numerous other devices, some wireless, most wired. All static. Xboxes are gamefule ruled only. Watch Netflix and such with out issues. My NAT is Open over a Motorola SB 6120 cable modem running 10Mb DL and 1Mb Up.

Do you need to run with WEP security? Its recommended that you use WPA or WPA2 at least. Just curious.

I do not have static IP's setup for any of them (Wired or wireless).  But I can try that out.

I followed your sticky to the T for the gamerfuel.  (Thats how I turned it on :))
I am not running static on the xboxes though because I would always have to manually logon to xboxlive. (wouldn't do it automatically for some reason).
The 360 does have an OPEN NAT, and when I check the bandwidth its around 9500 - 10000.  (checked from COD Black Ops)
I usually stream netflix pretty well, even HD comes in most of the time.  When it starts lagging I reset the router and all is well again. (Both through xbox WDTV)

My speedtest is usually 14 - 16meg DOWN and always 5meg UP. (not sure why my upload is so consisant, download varies ALOT!)

The reason I use WEP is because the password is easy and when friends come over they can logon with no problem.  If WEP could be the issue I can change if you think that would help.

I am not running static on the xboxes though because I would always have to manually logon to xboxlive. (wouldn't do it automatically for some reason).  I recommend using static IP addresses so that your game fule rules won't break should the DCHP IP address change for some reason on the xbox. The rules are static and if the Actual IPs change then the rules get broke in effect. Having Static IP addresses does not effect how you log in to XBL. It also helps into troubleshooting the system should something happen and it's easier to know whos who on your network. I would think the only reason of manual log into XBL is something in the account settings for XBL. Static IPs doesn't affect this. Thats an XBL configuration.

I usually stream netflix pretty well, even HD comes in most of the time.  When it starts lagging I reset the router and all is well again. (Both through xbox WDTV) You shouldn't have to reset the router. Something is not configured right here. I watch NetFlix as well and don't lag out. What model cable modem do you have? Do you have access it it's status and logs by chance?

My speedtest is usually 14 - 16meg DOWN and always 5meg UP. (not sure why my upload is so consisant, download varies ALOT!) Downloads will always vary depending upon ISP network traffic, traffice beyond the ISP and whom ever is also online in your area. Nature of the beast. However it should remain close to what your paying for.  ::)

The reason I use WEP is because the password is easy and when friends come over they can logon with no problem.  If WEP could be the issue I can change if you think that would help.  If your confident in using WEP and not worried about others trying to get in to your system then WEP is ok. It's just that WPA security offers more protection.
