If this subject has already been covered before I apologize in advance, I’ve done numerous searches on this site and others but can’t seem to come up with an answer to my problem.
 
Recently I purchased the DLink DNS-321 with the intentions for it to be a media server for Windows 7 Media Center.  I have a number of DVDs copied to the hard drive in my main computer. The main folder is called DVD MOVIES. Each of the DVDs has been ripped into separate folders under the main folder.  Those sub folders are name after the title of each DVD. [Example D:\DVD MOVIES\Cold Mountain (2003)]. Each of these folders contain the .IFO and .VOB files from the copied DVD.  A program called Yammm has been setup to insert an image and information about the movie into each of these folders for use with Windows 7 Media Center.  When accessing these files through the Movie option in Windows 7 Media Center, a picture icon along with a brief description of each movie is displayed. When a movie is selected is plays perfectly through Windows 7 Media Center.

A Seagate 2TB drive has been installed into the DNS-321 and has been formatted to EXT2 standard.  I copied my DVD MOVIES folder from my current computer system with it's sub folders over to the 2TB hard drive on the DNS-321.  I’ve also copied over my Music folder and Recorded TV folder to the hard drive in the DNS-321 as well.  The unit has been setup with a static IP address and is connected to my Asus WL-520GU wireless router running DD-WRT.  The other computers and laptop on the wireless network have full access to the files.  

Windows 7 Media Center library has been setup to access the proper folders on the DNS-321 for each of the Movie, Music and Recorded TV categories in WMC.  When accessing the Music category of Windows 7 Media Center the files play without any problem.  However if I try to play any files from the DVD MOVIES folder or the Recorded TV folder, the error Windows 7 Media Center has stop working is displayed and the program restarts.  This happens every time that one of the files from those two folders are used.  When I install XBMC Media Center on any of the computers or laptop sharing the DNS-321 files, it will access and play the movies from the DVD MOVIES folder without any problem.
 
Does anyone know if this is this a compatibility issue between the DNS-321 and Windows 7 Media Center? I’ve tried mapping the drives as well as enabling UPnP A/V but nothing helps the problem.  If anyone has successfully setup the DNS-321 as network media server for Windows 7 Media Center and has any ideas as to what I might be doing wrong please let me know.

Update: DLink Tech Support replied today that the problem might be due to the speed of my wireless network.  I've tried connecting the DNS-321 directly to the gigabit port on my computer and Windows 7 Media Center still has the same problem.

Has anyone had any success at setting the DNS-321 up as Network Media Server for Windows 7 Media Center? If so, could you please post how this was done? I would really like to get this NAS working with WMC in Windows 7 Ultimate.

I'm not sure why this would be but I've had weirdness playing VOB files through Windows Media Player.  Unclear why having those same files on the NAS would make that issue worse but I've found that it does.

I'm using Media Center 7 in the configuration you describe but I have all of my movies converted to wmv or avi (which also uses less space, by the way) and am having no issues.  You can grab the software tool Handbrake (which is free) and will do that VOB->wmv conversion for you.  Try grabbing a test wmv file and put it in your movie directory on the NAS and see if Media Center can play it.

I finally had some time to play around with the NAS and was able to solve the problem.  I did the Restore To Factory Default Settings and then went back in shared the folders.  Windows 7 is now able and play the DVD files as well as the Recorded TV shows just fine.
