Router LOGS - ?????
« on: December 17, 2010, 09:59:26 AM »

I have now had the pleasure of owning a DIR-625, a DGL-4500, and now a DIR-655.

On the 625 and the 4500, the logs are straightforward and make sense.
I cannot make heads or tails out of the logs that the 655 shows me.

*** Are you all getting the same kind of information as I am getting in my 655 logs below ?  ***

Hi icemankent,

Really straight forward.

Your other routers, do not have a Debug option, while the B1 Hardware Version of the D-Link DIR-655 does. The Debug option should be unchecked, unless you are having problems and Tech Support asks that you turn the option on.

Well that's the funny thing.
Debug is NOT checked off, yet you see the garbage I am getting ?!

You know, I don't think I have seen (any) messages on the logs that even remotely resembled what I got on my 625 or 4500.

I have tried unchecking ALL the selections, then adding them in, one by one - and the garbage you see is all I get.

D-Link Quality Assurance must have been on vacation the day they made mine.

Hi icemankent,

See what happens after doing a Factory Reset. If it does, exchange it.

By Factory reset do you mean:
- Go to the Tools/System page and click on "restore to factory default" ?
- Or is there a better method ?

Thanks

Hi icemankent,

No. There is a recess button in the back of the Router, next to the Power Port for the Power Cord. use a tiny sharp tool, like the end of a ice pick or a straighten Paper Clip to hold that button in for about 20~ to 30~ seconds and release with the Power On.

I reset it from the back of the router.
No change in performance.
Logs still look like I posted previously - (do you see that kind of info also, or is it just my 655) ?

As a router, it seems to work, but the firmware is extremely buggy.

As an example, on the status (device) page, it has given an IP address to one of my devices (wired), so it actually SEES it - yet when I look in Setup/Network Settings - it is NOT THERE !!
I want to be able to reserve that IP for that device but for some reason, this router does not want to let me !

I think D-Link must celebrate "Drink all you want on the job - Fridays", or something - and my router was probably manufactured on one of those days !
Either that or they make a few lemons on purpose so that those with correctly functioning units have something to be grateful for.

Call up D-Link Support and request a RMA for the Router. You might be getting an earlier Hardware Revision or request the same Hardware Revision, if you mine.
My friend has the B1 version, but the logs don't look like that.

Thanks.
I am still within my 30 day return period, so I think I'll return it after Xmas.
What are the odds of getting another small yellow fruit again - we'll see.

I have a Rev B version and that is what the logs look like.

Well, sometimes.

The logs seem completely unpredictable. Sometimes they are empty, sometimes they show garbage, and other times they show an intermediate level of incompetence (i.e. IP addresses leased by DHCP but no information on who it was leased to -- and no other log entries at all).

Hi mbg,

Contact D-Link Support and get a RMA for the Unit, unless you purchased it less than 30 days ago, then take it back to the store.

I would, but... as far as I know it works very well other than this issue. I have only had it for a few days.

Hi mbg,

If you don't use the logs, no problem. If you use the logs, you have a problem. Why wait?

Hey there - also check your STATISTICS.

Since owning mine, there have been:
- ZERO TX Packets Dropped
- ZERO RX Packets Dropped
- ZERO Collisions
- ZERO Errors

(this is for ALL of them - LAN, WAN, Wireless - (with the exception that collisions is only on the LAN, WAN)

Obviously this is NOT accurate, so in addition to the USELESS Logs, I cannot even trust the Statistics that this box reports.
I am returning mine to the store next week.
I'll pick up another one - keeping my fingers crossed that my new one was from a "good" batch.

The main reason is that I haven't had good luck with finding a router that has stable connections. I've been through three or four over the years that had one problem or another with connectivity. This one seems OK, other than the logs feature.

My log completely disappeared today -- page is totally empty, and it's been up for 2 days :)

I could go to a DIR-825, which has been excellent for me, but I only have experience with Rev A and I doubt there are any of those still around.
