FW 1.05 quirks
« on: May 14, 2008, 09:01:00 PM »

I decided to start a list of quirks that are present in firmware 1.05 - they may have been present in earlier firmware revisions, please feel free to add your own obervations.

  • 1)  The unit may/will format the wrong disk
This may be related to the use of "replacement" disks which already contain data
  • 2)  The unit may not complete a disk format
This may either take the form of a format failure message, or it simply stops at 94%
  • 3)  The unit may/will "wakeup" from power save mode at random intervals
The unit contains a freshly formatted RAID1 pair, no data has yet been written to the disks,
             with no printer installed

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

Fordem,
For #3 above, do you have the UPnP server, iTunes, etc services enabled, and what is the scanning interval?  It could be waking up to do the scan even though you have no data.

Cheers!

Karl - the unit was reset to factory defaults using the web interface, I assumed the default was disabled and never checked - it turns out that uPnP and iTunes are enabled by default (with a default refresh interval of none - does that mean they refresh continuously - or not at all) I have since disabled them (I have no use for them - for me this is strictly a data storage device) - and I will update if the situation changes.

I will point out here - just in passing - that I don't think the problem relates to those, surely we would see some sort of consistency as in wake up every x minutes or not wake up at all - what I believe happens is that it may go into power save and stay there for hours, and randomly wakeup and stay awake for hours - at least that was what it did with fw 1.04

  • 4) I don't quite know how to report this - the unit is no longer sending me an email alert on a disk failure
With earlier firmware if I removed a drive from a RAID1 pair at the next power up the system would detect the missing drive and email me - it no longer does this.

If the UPnP AV media server refresh is set to none it will only refresh when done manually via the refresh button.

Thank you for reporting the email alert info I will look into this issue that is fine just to post it on the forum as you did to bring it to our attention to be investigated.
