Router does not keep time
« on: May 19, 2008, 11:10:05 AM »

I cannot get the router to even remotely keep accurate time.
I have tried setting the time manually and tried using the NTP server (ntp1.dlink.com).

With a manual setting the time is off by multiple hours when checked the next day.
With the Enable NTP Server option checked the logs reports:

[INFO]   Sat May 17 19:57:43 2008   Time synchronization failed after retries ... giving up
[INFO]   Sat May 17 19:57:40 2008   Requesting time from 64.7.210.145
[INFO]   Sat May 17 19:56:40 2008   Time synchronization failed (status 2)
[INFO]   Sat May 17 19:56:37 2008   Requesting time from 64.7.210.145
[INFO]   Sat May 17 19:55:37 2008   Time synchronization failed (status 2)
[INFO]   Sat May 17 19:55:34 2008   Requesting time from 64.7.210.145
[INFO]   Sat May 17 19:54:55 2008   Log viewed by IP address 192.168.0.190
[INFO]   Sat May 17 19:54:34 2008   Time synchronization failed (status 2)
[INFO]   Sat May 17 19:54:31 2008   Requesting time from 64.7.210.145
[INFO]   Sat May 17 19:54:31 2008   Time server ntp1.dlink.com is at IP address 64.7.210.145
[INFO]   Sat May 17 19:54:31 2008   Stored configuration to non-volatile memory

Pinging 64.7.210.145 works fine.

Also, notice that "Save Changes" to set the NTP option changed the router time:

[INFO]   Sat May 17 19:54:31 2008   Requesting time from 64.7.210.145

The NTP server info is in my original post.
The server is ntp1.dlink.com.
I selected it from the drop down list on the  time menu on the DLink router configuration page.
And, yes, I can ping ntp1.dlink.com from a DOS box

How would I know?
I ave never deliberately configured or blocked a UDP port.
I have no idea how to check this.  Can you tell me?

It kinda sounds like the unit is defective. Other then the time issue, does the router operate normally?

Set the NTP to 128.100.100.128 If you still notice time is off on the Router.  On XP or Vista boxes you can add 128.100.100.128 to each PC to use for internet time buy editing the registry . Remember to update the DST issue with XP, 2003 Server and 2000. Vista should be okay.

Registry:

Local machine
software
Microsoft
windows
current version
date time
server <- this is were you want to be

now to the right panel
right click  on new - string value 3 or whatever is the next number so if you had 1 2 then 3
right click on modify  then add 128.100.100.128
Close registry
double click on the clock in system try
click on internet time
choose 128.100.100.128
click on update

your set..

Hi midhenry,

Is your Router properly sync'ed with your Modem? Try a complete reinstall of your Router with your Modem and see what happens.

I have the same Router version as you do and having no problems.

I also have an issue with the DIR-655 not keeping time. As I already have a ticket in for another issue, I have noticed that when my wireless it disabled (or turned off) the DIR-655 appears to keep time without an issue. But when the wireless is enabled (turned on) then it cannot keep time, or falls behind. Of course mine appears to want to reboot whenever it wants for about 30 minutes, our unless I remove power from the system.
I have the A2 ver and have updated the firmware to the current firmware (not willing to lose my router if something else goes wrong with it or I install the Beta firmware and it crashes).

Would that make a huge difference...? Isn't based off the NTP if you did it manuall and set the NTP to pull it in from 128.100.100.128. I just check myself and again it's keeping the correct time.
