Hello -
First off, thank you for taking time to read my posting.  I am new to the D-Link family (originally a Linksys Owner, but that is another story), and I currently have the DIR-655, and the DPR-1260 print server.  So far the router, DIR-655 is working as advertised.  I am using the Gigabit connection to two of my Desktop computers.  I also have an HP-770 printer connected to the network thru a bluetooth wireless connection built into the printer.  I also have an HP1210 USB printer connected to my DPR-1260 wireless print server.  In addition I have two other laptops that connect to the DIR-655 thru wireless connections using 802.11g adapters.  I'm currently using Channel 3 for wireless connections.  I have channel width set to Auto 20/40.  I also have mixed mode selected  802.11n / 802.11n.  I am also using WPA2 security.  Lastly my DIR-6555 is Hardware A3 and firmware 1.11  The router was purchased in late March 2008.

OK... now to my question.  I want to take one of my laptops and use 802.11n wireless connection to gain faster speeds.  I'm looking at purchasing the DWA-140 USB Range Booster 802.11n adapter.  Because of the fact that I have 802.11g devices connected to my router, will I be able to get the higher speeds on my laptop after I install and use the DWA-140 adapter?  Will I be able to see speed faster than the current 54.0 Mbps?  Again I am fairly new to the 802.11n environment.  I am mixing modes.  I thought I had read an article that stated unless all devices are using 802.11n, that the router will always run at the slower speed.  Can someone explain to me if my environment will support mixed mode, and allow my laptop to run at the faster speed once I install the DWA-140 adapter?  Again, I appreciate your assistance in helping me to resolve this question.

Hi Steve,

The adapter you are looking to purchase will not work with the DIR-655 Router.

You need this adapter: Xtreme N Notebook Adapter DWA-652

I obtain this information from this page: http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=1&pid=530

Once you are connected at 300 Mbps using 802.11n mode, you can switch to mixed mode.

Hi Thecreator -

Thank you for the reply and information.  I tried the Xtreme N Notebook Adapter DWA-652 for my laptop a couple of weeks ago and could never get above 54 Mbps speed.  No matter what I did to the DIR-665 configuration it would never go any faster.  Before reading your posting I went ahead and purchased the DWA-140 Rangebooster N USB Adapter and it works perfect!!  It connected to my wireless network on the first try and is running solidly at 270 Mbps  I've been using it for several hours now and there have been no failures at all.  I would say that this adapter will work with the DIR-655 routers.  As a matter of fact, D-Link even shows that is is compatable with the DIR-655 router on the page for the DWA-140 Adapter.  Here is the link:  http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=652

Thank you again for your reply.  I appreciate the feedback!!
