Wired connection drops when connected to DIR-655
« on: June 19, 2008, 01:49:05 PM »

I have a new DIR-655 Ver A3 with F/W 1.11, Just bought yesterday from Costco. I have a wired vonage PAP2 adaptor, Dlink GSM-G600, 2 Wireless PC connected and a Wired PC.

Everything from wireless looks to be working fine. [ too early to conclude ] but Wired PC  disconnects  network connection.

Here is the sequence using which I can consistently reproduce the problem.

1)   Disable LAN  and Enable, to get a new DHCP address
2)   In windows start run -- Use windows NetBIOS name [ computername] \\GSM600
This wired PC completely disconnects and LAN shows Media Disconnected.

In wireless connection also I can see \\GSM600 intermittently freezing, but comes up after 60 to 180 seconds. But wired PC can't  release / renew IP address using ipconfig windows utility also.

I assume this could be because the network speed negotiation between 10/100 Network card to 10/100/1000 Auto Negotiation.  Is there a way I can set the speed of the  LAN port speed. I can only see that for WAN.

Hi sureshkunder,

How are you connected to the Internet? DSL, Fios or Cable? What Cable Modem are you using?

Hi Lycan,

Yes, there is a cordless phone connected to vonage pap2 adaptor  which is 5.8 GHz.  My wireless is set at default 2.436 CH 6.  Moreover the connection drops intermittently not during the phone call.

Hi  TheCreator,

I am cable [ Comcast ]  user, my cable modem is surfboard 5100.

I had a dlink Di–524 in same environment setup, which worked fine for years, I bought this router for QOS for voip.

Interestingly my phone always working fine,   even though the wired PC connection is dropped. Could it be because of  QOS malfunction?.

BTW I also have an issue with my wireless connection, I will open a separate thread for that…

Hi sureshkunder,

Can you post the adapters in use to connect to the Dir-655 Wirelessly? It is important where possible to use matching Adapters.

Try using Channel 10 instead of Channel 6.

Are you using Network Magic to monitor the Network?

What is the speed of the slowest device connected to your Network? Are you using a NAS Device for storage?

My DIR-655 also reboot when the Wireless has interference with other devices. Finally I found a wireless channel can work with. Even the microwave ovens, 5.8 Ghz cordless phones, wireless baby monitors, wireless television transmitters.

Why the 5.8 Ghz cordless phones? - most 5.8 GHz cordless phones use 2.4 GHz for the return channel, without mentioning that fact anywhere on the box or in the manual.

Sugguest for D-Link: Please add a 2.4Ghz Spectrum Scans function onto DIR-655.

I have a DIR-655 Ver A2 upgraded to F/W 1.11, purchased/installed on 5/22/08 served from a Surfboard SB3100D cable modem. Attached to it is a wired Motorola VT2442-VD adaptor (for VOIP phone service), multiple wireless PCs (11g mode) connected from time to time, 1 wireless MAC G3 connected via a D-Link DWL-122 adapter (11b mode) and a wired PC.  During the period from 5/22/08 until 7/18/08 I did not have any wired connection drops.  Starting on or about 7/17/08, my wired connection has dropped each night.  My wired PC and DIR-655 still shows a valid linked IP address, but no connectivity.  I re-set the DIR-655 to permanently set an IP address for the wired PC, but this does not solve the problem.  My wired PC is set to obtain and install automatic updates from Microsoft.

I cannot renew or repair my IP address or connection using WinXP (ipconfig /renew) or Network Magic.  I have to either reboot my wired PC or power down/power up the DIR-655 to reconnect.

I was having a similar problem and this *seems* to have solved it.

I'm running the DIR-655 and a DWA-643 wireless adaptor in my laptop.

Uninstall the "Atheros" adaptor drivers from Microsoft. Re-install the latest drivers from D-Link, this seems to have solved the problem for me.
I went one step further and turned off the Atheros driver notification in Windows Update.
