Changing Security from WPA2 to WEP on a DIR-655
« on: July 04, 2008, 09:26:14 PM »

Is there a procedure for changing security methods on a DIR-655 router?  I'm currently running it with WPA2 security, but want to change it to WEP.  My first attempt at this failed.  I couldn't get the computer to access the internet via wireless.  And, yes, I did change the security setup in both the router and the client PC.  In case anyone is wondering why I'd want to do such an thing, is that I have network device that I want to add that only uses WEP security.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi Mike,

When you go with WEP security for a Device, the computers achieving 300 Mbps throughput only no longer get that high a speed.

My advice, replace the Device that uses WEP Security on the Network. Or know that you don't be able to achieve the higher internal speeds, using WEP Security.

See this post: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=616.0

This change makes the DIR-655 unnecessary to be used.

My suggestion is, if your are having trouble with WEP as your security level the answer is to actually go out side of normal wireless encryption and use Mac address filtering instead. if you disable security but limit the router access to only those devices that have MAC address on the router then you will be able to connect any device regardless of security and your router network will still be protected.
