Additional info regarding HD upgrade from 1TB to 2TB
« on: December 22, 2010, 08:08:58 AM »

Hi all

I have read a lot of posts on how to do the upgrade so my question is not really on that. These are the steps I will take:

1. back up the 323 settings (running FW 1.09)
2. remove both 1TB drives and label them so if need be I can put them in the proper slot. (keeping one drive as back up in case things go wrong)
3. install the new drives and format them for raid 1
4. install the ext2 driver and add the drive on my PC
5. wait for the format to finished
6. (question 1)

Question 1: Now this is where I need some clarification. Do I need to un share and remove the permissions on the old drives before doing the steps described above? or do I just leave the current config and just recreate the folders and shares and grant the same permission on the new drives, then copy the data over to the 323?

Question 2: The new drives might be pre formated so should I delete the partitions before installing the drives in the 323?

Thanks

Denis

Q1- As far as I'm aware the share config is stored on the drive, so when you remove them, that will go too.

Q2- Unless it's formatted as EXT2/3 I don't think this is necessary. New drives are usually zero filled aren't they?

I'm installing two new 2TB drives today as well, so your questions are timely for me.  :)

But you've thrown a wrench in my plans...after reading around I had settled on ext3...I'm curious about the factors that led you to choose ext2?  I'd decided on ext3 for the additional reliability/data integrity available there, and I'm only streaming a little audio from the drive so the performance demands on it are not very significant....

Thanks.

Well my current drives are formatted in ext2 cause ext3 was not an option at the time but my new drives will be ext3.

Good news

All went well last night with the HD upgrade (Seagate  2TB ST32000542AS), the damn thing is still transfering data after 12 hours  ::). Well 900GB at 10mb/s for the first 4 hours then dropped to 5mb/s for some reason, no wonder its taking forever...  >:(

I think my next move is to get another Nas, it will probably be this one: http://www.buffalotech.com/products/network-storage/home-and-small-office/linkstation-pro-duo-ls-wvlr1/, 72mb/s now thats probably the fastest NAS on the market  8).

BTW Thanks Jamie for the info  ;D

The DNS-320 is out in the UK now, with a faster spec than the 323.

Mine went well yesterday also, looks like data transfer may have finally completed (but only 450 GB for me).  :)

I had seen posts about these drives being noisy, but they seem perfectly quiet to me...nice to have the extra space.
