Unable to use 1000Mbps connection
« on: December 31, 2010, 01:35:25 PM »

I've been beating my head up over this issue for the last couple days.  I have a DLink DGE-530T Gigabit NIC in my computer, which runs through a DGS-2205 Gigabit Switch and the switch is then connected to a DIR-655 Gigabit router.  The basic issue is this: whenever I set the speed of the NIC to "Auto-Negotiate" or "1000Mbps" it will start connecting and disconnecting every few seconds.  After a little while on my Windows Server 2003 computer, it will blue screen and say there was a memory parity error and to contact the vendor.  On my Windows XP machine with the same NIC, it will just sit there connecting and disconnecting.

However, if I set the speed to "100Mbps Full Duplex," the NIC operates just fine, albeit at 100Mbps rather than the 1000Mbps I purchased everything for.

Here is what I have tried:
-Updating the firmware on the DIR-655 to 1.35
-Using NIC driver versions 7, 8, and 9 on the Windows Server 2003 machine
-Using the default NIC driver on the Windows XP machine
-Removing the switch and putting only this one NIC connected to the DIR-655
-Made sure all my cables are CAT 5E

Does anyone else have any ideas as to what I am missing in order to get this running at 1000Mbps?

Thanks in advance.

well....sounds like the NIC might be bad...or the obvious answer is you have a driver issue....

Try a different slot for the NIC in the pc or server....  any access to a different Gb NIC ?

I went out and bought a different gigabit NIC and it worked just fine, which means something is up with this first NIC.  Any suggestions of what to try with it?  I'm going to continue experimenting with it, but would enjoy hearing what others suggest.

NICs that go flaky can only be troubleshot by behaviours with or without them installed....

I have seen them fail by flooding data onto my LAN.....  or by simply not connecting...and likely a couple other ways....

also sometimes certain NICs are not friendly with certain mobo chipsets......  can't say why...just is.

I have a worse problem, I installed two DGE-530T NICs on the same computer running Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2. Use pnputil utility to install the Windows 2008 64 bit drivers, but got only one of the DGE-530T working. The other, at first time, worked (ipconfig showed it with IP got from DHCP), but when I tried to assign it to a virtual network adapter through Hyper-V Manager, simply went away, it does not appear anymore as an available NIC or through ipconfig.

The other is still working and I assigned it with no problem. I would like that the second DGE-530T works, but I ran out of options, do not know how to do it. Both NICs are pretty new, never used before.

Any help, please?

Thanks
James
