Problems with printers on Wireless and Cat 5 Lan
« on: January 01, 2011, 03:43:43 PM »

Recently upgraded to the D-Link from a linksys router, have 4 LAN computers using cat 5 connections, 1 laptop currently and 2 wii/xbox connections. Everything works perfectly fine with one exception, the laptop is not able to see any of my networked computers and vice versa. I do have file and print sharing enabled, all the computers can print with exception of laptop obviously. Have updated firmware. Software is good. All i am trying to do is enable the laptop to be seen and see other computers as well as use the network resources IE printer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Are you mixing Win 7 / Vista and XP computers ?  This can be a hassle doing so....

Are you using exactly the same name for the Workgroup ?   HOME1 is not the same as home1....

Any firewall software on each of the pc's ?   Is sharing enabled on each pc ?

Sharing is enabled on each PC, it worked perfectly with the linksys setup i previously had before it took its last breath. Yes windows 7 laptop and windows xp desktops, not a problem using both operating systems. Firewalls are disabled.

How is the printer networked? Is the printer connected with a LAN cable to the router or USB cable to a PC then shared out? If your connecting via USB and sharing it out, the PC that the printer should be online all the time. You have to enter in the path of the printer, browsing to it on the shared PC sometimes donesn't work. Enter in the path directly: \\SharedPCName\NameOfSharedPrinter and try that.

Are your devices set for DHCP? Try using assigned IP addreses including the printer if it's connected via LAN cable.

By default, several D-Link routers can have the "advanced wireless" setting of WLAN Partition.  This completely blocks all wireless adapter "clients" from seeing wired devices.
