Has anybody here managed to achieve 300Mbps speed?
« on: January 03, 2011, 11:09:54 PM »

I have a DIR-655 with 2 DAP-1522s in bridge mode. I have followed the guideline given in the sticky for the 300 Mbps set-up. However the most I can get out it is 130Mbps, even at 100% signal strength.

The setting on DIR-655 are (items marked with * are not configurable as they were grayed out):
--Hardware Version: B1 Firmware Version: 2.00NA
--802.11 Mode : mixed 11gn (#)
--Auto channel scan: enabled
--Channel : 2.437Ghz Ch6* (note 1)
--Transmission rate: Best(automatic)
--Channel Width : Auto 20/40 MHz (#)
--Security mode: WPA personal
--WPA mode: WPA2 only (#)
--Ciphor type: AES (#)
--Wi-Fi Protected Setup : Disabled/Configured

Setting for DAP-1522 are as follows (items marked with * are not configurable as they were grayed out):
--802.11 Band: 2.4GHz/5GHz*
--802.11 Mode: Mixed 802.11 abgn*
--Wireless Channel: 36* (note 1)
--Transmission Rate: Best(automatic)*
--Channel Width: auto 20/40 MHz
--Security Mode: WPA personal
--WPA Mode: WPA2 only
--Cipher Type: AES
--WPS: disabled
--Wireless MAC Cloning: disabled

Note 1: on the status pages of both DIR-655 and DAP-1522, ithe channel is listed as 11, though.

So what look suspicious here? I don't like the fact that on DIR-655 the channel is defaulted to 2.5GHz (Ch6) since the field is grayed out and not settable.

When I compare my settings against the requirements mentioned in the sticky, all of them are met! Those settings that meet the requirement are marked with (#). In particular, the sticky stressed that the channel width needs to be set to "auto 20/40Mhz". Otherwise it will be forced to 130Mhz. My router is set to auto 20/40Mhz, but I am still only getting 130MHz at the most.

What's wrong?!

It's funny that I just received my N adapters and came to look at what speeds other people are getting and this is the top post.  :D

With the new adapter, the top constant speed is 130mbps as you've mentioned. I've not had a chance to play with any settings whether on the computer or router. I too have 100% strength. I will be playing with this later on during the week and I will post my results. If you or anyone finds success, please continue to post.

Try rebooting the router after you have the computers up and running. I found that helped when I first got the router and was only getting 130. After a few days, the NICs and router seemed to learn each other and since then have been regularly connecting at the higher speeds. Your mileage may vary though.

You don't say what your network adapter is, that is a major part of the equation.  I have a 655 A2 on 1.35 NA and a DWA-552 in a computer that is upstairs and on the opposite side of the house from the router and I generally see 240 for a rate. I have router set for N only.

The greyed out channel is not the default channel, it is greyed out because you have it set to auto channel scan.  The Status page of the router will tell you the actual channel that is being used.

Just did a reboot, and I am still getting rates that top at 130Mbps. I don't know if letting it sit for a few days will make it "smarter" and figure out that there are N devices out there--it hasn't for me and I have rebooted the router a few time in the past already.

There are multiple devices connected directly to the router (Dir-655) wirelessly: among them an Acer laptop with a Broadcom 802.11n adapter (that's how much info I can get by looking at the property of that interface) and an iPhone. Both N-devices sit about 7 ft from the router and get 100% signal strength (or -42dB as reported by the eWifi app on my iPhone). The Acer is getting 130Mbps while the iPhone is getting only 65Mbps. I have a couple of G devices too and they get about 48M (86%) -54Mbps (100%). The devices attached to DAP-1522 bridge downstairs (which is at 92% signal) get around 100+Mbps.

Oh, one more thing--I hooked a Netgear 10/100 hub between the DAP bridge downstairs and devices attached to it. I suppose it could limit the throughput to 100M for those devices. But I am not getting rates beyond 130M for those devices that connect directly to the router. And a second DAP-1522 upstairs is getting 100% signal. Devices are hard wired to it directly and are getting 78M

The greyed out channel is not the default channel, it is greyed out because you have it set to auto channel scan.  The Status page of the router will tell you the actual channel that is being used.

How do I know whether it is running 2.4G or 5G then? Would running at 5G give me speed beyond 130M? If so how can I force it to run at 5G?

p.s. Does anybody here know how to insert a jpg file in the msg? The "insert image" button only inserts a img tag into the message. I think I need to upload my image to the server somehow or maybe a url for the image hosted somewhere?

The 655 does not operate at 5 GHz.  Its only a 2.4 GHz router.

Whoops! Since the DAP-1522 is a dual band. I kinda automatically assume that the 655 is a dual band too. Duh.

So can anyone here spot anything wrong with the settings I have selected (in my original post)? I myself think that the settings I have meet the requirement for 300M as noted in the sticky.

Like I posted before, alot of it depends on the adapter that is in the system.  Different manufacturers use different things to implement max throughput.   The best way to get max out of the network is to have matched routers and wirless adapters.  Then make sure everything is running N Only any other settings may reduce your speeds.

The best way to get max out of the network is to have matched routers and wireless adapters.

What I am most interested in is to have the 655 communicate with the 2 DAP-1522 wireless bridges at the maximum achievable rate, i.e. 300Mbps, since I have quite a few wired devices I want to hook up to the bridges. Since both are made by D-Link and both support 11n, I hope they can, and should, talked to each other at close to 300Mbps. But currently they are not, even after I have met all the requirement as specified by their support engineer in setting up both devices. or so I think.

Then make sure everything is running N Only any other settings may reduce your speeds.

I have 2 wireless printers I have just purchased recently that are running on 11G. I can't afford to take them offline. From what is implied in the sticky note on 300Mpbs requirement at the beginning of this section forum, it is OK to have mixed G/N environment and still be able to achieve close to 300Mpbs throughput.

You'll need to run Mixed G and N modes to get your printers to work on WiFi unless they can be connected via LAN cable if they support it. If you use mixed mode, then you can't get 300Mb connections and will only get 130Mb. And you have to remember this router does not do 5Ghz band so getting 300Mb connections is not supported on this router unless you run single mode N and have client side HW that supports 300Mb on 2.4ghz.

The DAPs probably use the dual band in order to get the 300 Mbs, since the 655 is only 2.4 you probably won't see 300 with this setup.

So it appears that 130Mb is the max throughput I can get in my DIR-655/DAP-1522, Mixed G/N environment. Thanks to you all for your input!

Actually both statements here are false... #1 you can still achieve 300Mb/s connectivity by having the mode set to mixed G & N, and #2 this model dir-655 does support 300Mb/s as it does say so on the box despite being a 2.4 Ghz frequancy router.

FYI I have also connected to the dir 655 router at that connection speed with a Dlink Xtreme N adapter at Mixed G & N modes, just had to be at the WPA2 Security with AES
