Unable to connect to particular website through router
« on: January 04, 2011, 07:19:31 AM »

I am timing out when attempting to connect to a particular website for all the computers on my network using my DIR-655. I checked my router's setting but I have no website filtering in place. Is there any other router setting which would cause one particular http address to always time out ? When I try to ping the web address it times out also, so it makes me think it is not the DNS server. Of course it could be my ISP, but why would a single web address time out always whereas my normal web surfing has no problems ?

Have you connected one PC directly to the ISP modem and tried this web site?

You might try playing with the firewall settings. I couldn't log on to my bank site and several others until I changed the firewall settings.

What Firewall settings did you change that solved your problem ? I have never changed the Firewall settings from their default, which is:

Enable SPI - checked
UDP Endpoint Filtering - Address Restricted
TCP Endpoint Filtering - Port and Address Restricted
Enable DMZ - unchecked
All the Application Level gateways are checked

you could try turning off the FW for a test.
Then try setting the firewall options TCP and UDP both to Endpoint Independent.

How does one "turn off" the Firewall ? Do you mean uncheck SPI ?

yes

I tried all of the changes you suggested with the firewall but it made no difference with this one web address. I will check with my ISP and see if they know anything. Thanks for your help.

Was curious if you connected your PC directly to the ISP modem, does the same thing happen?

I tried this but I could not connect to the Internet at all. I think this is because I have to change my Local Area Connection TCP/IP settings so it does not go through the router. I will see if it works when I choose "Obtain an IP address automatically", rather than my current DIR-655 router settings, and keep my DNS server addresses in the TCP/IP settings. I think I set it up originally so I could have the same static IP address each time.

I think you should try setting your PC network settings to all Automatic. Let the Router hand off addresses. I would also set up a static IP address on the router for your devices. Then you can always set them for automatic and they will get the same addresses from the router all the time.

Yes, I tried that those settings also without solving my problem.

The web site that always times out for me is one associated with the Mozbackup program, which allows one to backup Mozilla settings. That web site address is http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/, and it always times out whether in Firefox or if I ping the site. An alternate address for Mozbackup, http://www.mozbackup.org/, I have no problem surfing.

Which router setting(s) allow me to setup static IP addresses for my devices ?

Setup/Network
Look for the Number of Dynamic DHCP Clients section. You can see all of the connected devices that have an ip address. You can select on the Reserve link next to each row on the right side. This will populate the Add DHCP Reservation section. You can choose to keep the last ip address number or give it something different. Some people like to start with 2 and progress up. Then select Add. Do this for each device listed in the Dynamic DHCP Clients section. Very easy to do.
