slow internet with DIR-655
« on: January 04, 2011, 03:11:03 PM »

I recently updated my DIR-655 (hardware A3) router the latest firmware 1.35NA.  After I updated, I noticed that my internet speed was drastically reduced and for some reason, I can't find the set up I had before I upgraded (I had 1.21 before upgrade to 1.35).  I've messed with the settings, reset it, did pretty much anything I could think of to get it to go faster.
Last night I somehow made it so no computer but mine would connect to it but I had the speed I wanted.  I then reset the router completely and still had the same speeds.  It remained fast until about an hour ago when it just bogged right down and I can't get it to be fast again.
I used speedtest.net in order to see what it was doing and I'm getting a download of about .7 every time when I should be getting about 3 with the internet I have.  At one point my upload speed was faster than my download which doesn't take a genius to figure out that that's not good.
Any help would be appreciated on figuring out why this update made my internet so slow, I'm assuming something is clicked or not clicked that's not allowing the full speed to be sent out to the computers but I have no clue.

Was there a reason to update the FW? Was your router working before the update? Had there been any prior configurations to your modem that you are ware of? They are gone now if there was any configurations before.

What is your ISP modem? DSL or Cable?
How are you connecting? Wired or Wireless? If Wireless what are your wireless settings? Try G mode only at 2.4Ghz instead of mixed mode.?

I was playing xbox and I kept getting into games and then I wouldn't be able to hear my friends and I read a forum saying that updating to the latest sometimes fixed that so...I did it.  My router was fine before the update and then as soon as I updated, I got back on xbox and it was nothing but lag.  I did have it configured before but with very few changes and it worked fine.  Had a few port forwards and certain things checked/unchecked but nothing drastic.

I have Windstream in NY, I believe it's DSL.  My laptop is wireless and is being slow and so is my xbox which is wired.  I've literally tried every option, it's my whole internet not just one computer.  (I used to have 5 computers on it at a time without any problems, now I can't even have 1 without it being slow)

Don't mean to bump the topic or anything but any help would be greatly appreciated, I hate calling the companies because they just tell me to reset the router a million times which isn't really helpful.

If your on DSL, does your DSL Modem have an internal router is is it stand alone? If it's got an internal router, have your ISP bridge it to the 655 router.
Make sure your primary and 2ndary DNS Ip addresses are being filled in. I notice that my cousins that I help set up did not do this automatically. You can find the DNS IP addresses under Status/Device Info/Wan section. Copy and paste these addresses into the Setup/Internet/Manual section if they are showing zeros.

If your trying to game over Wireless, Try setting the routers WiFi to single mode G to test. Preferred gaming is to connect wired between the router and console.

Review the gaming and gamefuel stick on the DGL-4500. IT works and even though the user interface is different, the information in the sticky will work for the 655 as well.
