Brick'd my DIR-655
« on: January 05, 2011, 09:58:34 PM »

Full story:
My internet stopped working today. So I tested going to the modem directly via patch cable, that worked. Culprit seemed to be the DIR-655. I logged into status screen to see that the DNS had no value. I tried manually changing the DNS servers to OpenDNS ones and it wouldn't update. So I decided to do a reset. That didn't work, tried it 3x. Also unplugged modem waited, etc. Then router and waited an hour, did that 3x, no luck. I noticed after reseting firmware went back to manufacturer. So I downloaded the latest firmware 1.35NA (I live in Canada and bought it at BestBuy about 2 years ago). I proceeded to upgrade. It did not fix the issue, nor could I manually edit the DNS servers.

Continued, and the important part:
My router also started behaving strangely, even after setting all my settings again - so I pressed reset. It did nothing at all - no lights coming up to show its resetting. A few minutes later I just unplugged it from the wall. Now it doesn't work via lan connection or wifi. Seems done. The lights/etc work correctly though. What can I do? Can I load a firmware via a USB? Seems like I bought a 100$ brick that died without a warranty........  :-[

The the 30-30-30 process.
Follow these steps to perform a router hard reset:
1. when the unit is powered on, hold down its reset button for 30 seconds
2. while still holding down the reset button, unplug the router from power and hold for an additional 30 seconds
3. still holding down the reset button, turn on power to the router again and hold for 30 more seconds

We were told here in the past that the 30-30-30 process has no effect on DLink routers.

OK, thought it might help.  ::)
Try this:
Emergency Recovery Mode

If not, RMA it.
