DGL-4500 connection drops driving me insane

this is killing me, i shelled out for a router that was supposed to support heavy traffic and i end up with something just as bad as the connection drops i was getting with the linksys BEFSR41 4-port router

torrenting and remote access at some point always end up stalling the connection or drop all together until the router can cycle itself to reset.  endless problems trying to connect a Ninentendo WII via wireless as well, while my brother in law plugged his WII into his DIR-615 and it hooked up NP.  I don't get it

I think the DGL-4500 has some heat issues.  I stood mine up in the side with the included stand and it has since stopped dropping/locking up during heavy traffic.

As for the Wii, I had some issues at first too.  I think in the end I set the router to WPA2 and then set the Wii for 'WPA2 with AES' and TKIP.  Something like that... I did get it to work though.

agreed.  it definately has some heat issues but i actually have a box fan blowing on it, i'll try standing it up as you suggested tho.  anything's worth a shot.  WPA2 with AES is what i was initially using as well, along with every other combination i could think of and its just not authenticating.  finds the signal great, i dunno. 

i'm weary about upgrading to the next firmware 1.12, i think it mentioned that you can't downgrade to 1.02 once you upgrade ?  i'm worried i'll be stuck in a worse situation then, reports seem overall optimistic so far i think at least on dslreports.com http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r20917368-DGL4500-Firmware-112-Released

The unit requires adequate ventaillation. It has a 400Mhz CPU on it. If you think back, PC's with a 400Mhz CPU had fans. This does not. It should, but it doesn't.
IF standing the unit up allows for better air flow past the PASSIVE cooling, then I suggest doing that.

I've stood the router up on its end using the stand that comes with the dgl-4500 , this has only slightly improved the situation, however connection drops and router rebooting/recycling on its own is still happaning, just not as frequently but still avg 3-5 times a day it drops connection then reconnects or recycles then reconnects... 
still running 1.02fw

can you run a syslogger, (kiwi is best) and post the log here. I'd like to take a look at what it's doing right before reboot.

I just wanted to say that I run this router and it's cool to the touch even though it's wall mounted above my switch and modem.  If your unit is getting hot then it could be defective.

For the first time just a few minutes ago my 4500 started rebooting itself during heavy traffic.  It's never done that before.  I'm streaming live news from NOLA watching the storm come ashore.  My router just started rebooting itself numerous times dropping my internet connection.  Very strange behavior indeed.

Edit:  Everything was fine after I left the site but once I returned my router started rebooting again.  http://www.livenewscameras.com and the hurricane coverage page.  It makes my router act all weird and causes it to reboot.

Since heat seems to be such an issue, is there any chance of dlink producing an attachable fan of some sort or am i stuck rigging up a box fan of some sort?

its been a while, i got a little busy in life and had to put this on the back burner for a bit,  but recently i had my router go into a bit of a fit and it was rebooting continually for a while.  
i'm still scared to flash the firmware up since once i do i can't roll back.  any light you can shed would be appreciated

hi mrroper,

Huge logs going there.  Looks like it's blocking a lot of connections, where there is no "active" connection.  So it's just idle.

I will however say that 1.15 is working nicely for me.  I've gone through MANY updates.  1.02, 1.03, 1.10, 1.11, 1.12, 1.13, and now the most recent 1.15.

I decided to stand mine upright as well, and it's been great.  I even adjusted my antennas, and I get a much better signal.  :)
