I am trying to set up an FTP server using Filezilla. Before I even got to any of that, I knew that I would have to forward port 21 eventually, so before I downloaded the software... I tried forwarding on the 4500 (1.22NA). I went to Gaming and chose the proper IP (DHCP reservation for my computer) and enabled & opened the ports. Since Cablevision often blocks ports, I forwarded both 21 and 27 (as a test port) in case they are blocking the common port 21. I also went into McAfee and unblocked ports 21 and 27 on the software firewall side (if that even matters). Windows Firewall is turned off I believe... as McAfee handles it. I restarted everything on my 64-bit Windows 7 system (modem, router, computer) and then went to a site for seeing if the port is open... and neither are.

This makes me worry that my Xbox port forwards aren't doing anything either. Am I doing something wrong?

Are you using Virtual Server for opening up your ports? What options are you using?
Could have thought someone else had this same issue with FileZilla on here. Have you done a search for FileZilla here?

Review the gaming and gamefuel sticky for setting up xbox. It works great.

I haven't even downloaded Filezilla yet. I am just trying to simply forward a port using "gaming". I forwarded 21 and 36 and neither are open. I tried using Virtual Server to forward port 36 (after you mentioned it), but I still cannot get access to that port.

I just need help getting those ports open. I also disabled SPI as was suggested by another site, but that didn't work either.

I read though it and I have done everything (gaming, virtual server) without success. I don't even care about Filezilla anymore. I just want to open up a port somehow, because the 4500 is not doing it. Not what I expected from such an expensive router. Very disappointing.

Can someone try to randomly open up a port (under gaming) on their router and then go to some site like canyouseeme.org and verify that it is actually opening ports for them? This is making me quite skeptical that this router is even opening up ports for any application (i.e. Xbox).

What is your ISP service? Cable or DSL?

Is your ISP modem a stand alone modem or does it have a internal router?

For xbox, I recommend using the Gamefuel settings as you don't need the gaming options for game consoles. It works and has been proven to work very well. I have 2 boxes on my system, others have 3 or more.

Read thru the sticky for the xbox settings.

Get ahold of Hard Harry, He's got more info. Yes, the ISPs can block ports. Have you turn the Windows firewall off completely?

Let us know what happens when you set up the gamefuel rules for the xbox.

I have removed the router and connected directly to the modem and the ports are open, so the router is indeed not forwarding the ports. Not sure what else to do.

Ok, well I dug around and tried all kinds of combonations and I found the problem..just haven't found the solution yet and welcome people's input. The issue is with UPnP. When fallowing the thread Furry gave, and disabling UPnP and my AV, and using this tool port scan active. Enabled UPnP and didn't touch anything else, and didn't scan. My two questions I am working on is

1. Is there a difference between the port scan not reading the port and FTP not actually working. Maybe it has to do with how the scan works? For instance, when I use this scan, it works with UPnP even without Virtual Server enabled.

2. Is there anyway to forward around UPnP or does all traffic hit that before NAT? Pretty sure it goes UPnP > SPI > NAT > Routing. DMZ bypasses everything but Routing and some more basic aspects of SPI. Forwarding and Virtual server just bypasses SPI and down. Any ideas?

After about a billion tweaks and restarts, I have actually found my issue (finally). It is my McAfee Firewall and apparently not the router. Though I have opened up a port in the McAfee settings, it refuses to actually open up the port itself. I have to disable the firewall in order to get that port open. If you think you can help with this, then I am all ears, but I understand that this isn't the purpose of this forum. Thanks for the help either way!

By the way, part of the problem I was having was using some of the website port checkers that were telling me that the port was closed when it really was not. I downloaded the PFPortChecker and it gave me more realistic results.

Yea, I was having that issue too. I think UPnP messed up with some of the tests, and not with the ports themselves. Come to think of it, I know for a fact I used CuteFTP with UPnP on.

Best way to configure Mcafee firewall? Get rid of Mcafee. Hehe. Its one of the 3 boy band like AV products (Norton, Mcafee, Trend) with lots of fame, but very little actual talent. May I suggest Avast if you want free, or NOD32 if you can pay. Other then that, no, have no experiance with Mcafee.
