DIR-628 Wireless dropps
« on: January 10, 2011, 10:40:14 AM »

I have the DIR-628 and like many posting here, I have the problem of the wireless dropping. I’ve read through the posts and I’ve followed the steps others have tried. No luck in getting this router to keep a good connection. Each device has great signal strength and speed never seems to be a problem. One thing I have learned is to limit the number of devices connecting wirelessly. But I don’t feel that I should have to limit the small number of wireless devices I use.

A little about my setup:
Comcast cable internet
1 PC , wired
1 printer, wired
A WD Live connected wirelessly and it looks to the wired PC for media, Uses a N connection
A D-Link wireless AP/Bridge in Bridge mode using an N connection, 1 PC connected
2 laptops connecting wirelessly, one using G and the other using N
And a Playstation connecting wirelessly, G

So my question is more of a request for a different router than a discussion of how to get this router to function more reliably. In other words I give up on this product.  I see where many cut on D-Link products. As I see it all the major manufactures as mass producers of thrown together products. They are quick to come out with new products and then discontinue support. They fail to test their products fully. So, what product to buy? Which manufacture and model do I purchase next?

Was curious, are there any other WiFi routers in the area? Any house cordless phones? These and other things can cause interference and disconnections. Have you shut everything down and tried just connecting one laptop to the router then to the AP and see what happens?

There are other WiFi routers in the area. Actually I can pick up several. No wireless phones in the house.

It seems that the connection drops when another device connects to the network. When using the WD Live I've discovered that if the playstation connects I will lose the connection for a few seconds. Once I connect again the connection will drop off and on. As an example, I'm playing a movie on the WD Live from a shared folder on the PC connected by wire. The WD is connected wireless, 2.4Ghz, N. The playstation, also wireless, just gets turned on and makes a connection. Wireless goes away.... On occasion the router is rebooting itself. I've watched it go through several reboots before settling down and allowing connections to be made.

Really it seems the router can't handle the load. The router will drop with just the two laptops, surfing the internet, though not as often as when the WD Live is connected. If the house is nice and quiet, one person home and only one laptop running, no drops.

I've looked at this as overheating, how many devices this router can take on at a time, WiFi channel, etc.  Nothing has made a difference, except for one device at a time. Maybe it needs to be looked at in terms of utilization. Anyone know of a tool that will show me the bandwidth utilization?

Hmmm...How about trying single mode G for testing? Wondering if it does this on the there mode. If so I would presume that this unit could be bad. My father in law has one and I was just up there and his is running G mode only at 2.4GHz. It was ok however I added a bridged AP for gaming while I was there. Hehe. What about WLAN Partition? It should not be check marks as enabled. Also uncheck Short GI under Advanced Wireless.

Give G mode only a go and if it's doing the same might be time for a different router. I agree it should handle anything you put at it basically. One thing that I noticed is that this router seems to be designed for more general interneting and basic use. Gaming and Video streaming aren't one of it's stronger points. I've been using the DGL-4500
