NINTENDO DSi XL DIR 615 EMULATOR
« on: January 10, 2011, 12:31:33 PM »

I'm hoping someone can help me.  I need to set up the emulator (provided by D-link/http://support.dlink.com/emulators/dir615_revC/310NA/login.htm) for my Nintendo Dsi XL to accept WEP security.  I did this somehow in the past with my old DSi, but can't find the support page for the correct settings.

I tried to just change the security settings and tried to save, but got a pop up box, which said this feature has been disabled by this emulator.

So, I'm at a loss.  Please don't tell me to manually configure my settings in the DSi, because my games do not support configurations manually set up (Only slots 1 - 3 per Nintendo, manual configurations start at slot 4).

I'm at a loss as to how to fix this, so please if you have any suggestions, let me know.  And yes, I know I can still play the game without this, but cannot access several game features, which require wi-fi.

THANKS!!! :D

The emulators are just that, emulators, that give people basic functionality and limited options. These aren't connected to any actual router HW. Setting actual settings are limited and mostly disabled as they are not setting anything. The emulators provided people with just a visual representation of what the routers web pages looks like along with various options and features.

Does Nintendo have support site that has connection information?

Nintendo posts that they only support WEP.  I've tried adding my DSI device (and that's how I got my old one to work), but wasn't able to do it this time, or who knows, forgot how I did it before.  Maybe I just got lucky.  Now, when I try adding the address of my DSI, nothing is accepted.  Everyone online says to just change the router security to WEP, but I don't want to do that.  I run Windows 7, 64 bit, wireless N.  I've thought about purchasing one of those little usb wi fi adapters, but not sure if it would work, since I have an existing network.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.   :D

Well, it sounds like your being limited by the secuity of the DSI device. If they don't have any other options for security on the DSI then the router would have to be changed to WEP so you could use the DSI on the WiFi. This would effect all other WiFi. You could set the router to WEP for short periods of time if you wanted the DSI to connect. Then change back. This wouldn't be the option I would use. You could possible get a WiFi access point device that does WEP and you could wire connect it to the 615. This wireless acess point could be set up just for WEP for the DSI. Could be ran in G mode only so it wouldn't affect the N Wireless. It's a shame Nintendo isn't putting in support for WPA or WPA2. Makes it hard when most people are using WPA2 since its the most secure.

Thanks, that's how I feel about changing the router settings.  I would sooner buy something cheaper, wireless G and set up the nintendo that way, than to change the router.  I don't know why Nintendo would develop these systems and not support WPA or WPA2, doesn't make sense to me.

I don't play games through wi fi at all, it's just that there are some games, that if you don't connect to wi fi, you won't open hidden items of the games.  Here's the irony;  I can connect to internet via the dsi, but they don't let you access those items, unless you have an automatic wi fi connection.

Oh well, it's a game, not world hunger, leprosy, or some other "real" crisis.  :D

Thanks again.

Theres a good reason why it won't support WPA. You need a certian chipset for it, and I don't think it was available for the board they used. Its complicated though. To put simply

"Ok to make everything simple... yes the dsi xl has wpa settings but only for your apps and dsi shop"

If you're forced to use WEP across your network and you don't have random devices constantly connecting to it (like friends coming over and wanting to connect their smartphones, laptops etc.) then I strongly recommend enabling MAC-based network filtering.

First, connect all your devices to the network, both wired and wireless. Then in the router interface go to Advanced > Network Filter.

From the "Configure MAC Filtering below:" drop-down menu select "Turn MAC Filtering ON and ALLOW computers listed to access the network"

Then use the "DHCP Client List" drop-down to select each of your devices and use the << button after selecting each one to fill the corresponding MAC address entry.

If you have devices with manually configured IPs (non-DHCP) they might not appear here and you might have to manually find out and enter their MAC addresses.

After you do this, don't forget to hit the Save Settings button.

Now only the devices with those MAC addresses will be authorized to access and use the network. Even if an attacker hacks your WEP key (a matter of minutes) they still won't be able to connect.

Just remember if you want to add a device in the future you need to come back to this screen and add its MAC to the list then save.

Hope this help. Good luck.

One downside however is that you can't get N speeds while using WEP. This security mode is not supported by the N standard (and for good reason). Enabling WEP for your entire wireless network will limit it to G speeds.
