Problem Updating Firmware
« on: January 11, 2011, 01:59:42 PM »

My DIR-655 is HW V A3 currently running firmware 1.32NA. I have tried a couple of times now to upgrade to firmware 1.35NA. The process completes and all the messages indicate that it has correctly updated the firmware but the web interface still indicates 1.32NA. I have tried updating the firmware and then doing a hard reset and even tried to start at 1.33NA first all with the same result. I am getting the firmware files directly from the D-link site. Any ideas?

Try doing a factory reset from the Tools/System menu options, then update with the bin file, then do one more factory reset.

The restore to factory defaults menu button did not seem to do anything at all. However, I pressed the reset button on the router which did restore everything to the factory default. I then applied the firmware and after the process completed I pressed the reset button on the router again and the firmware update finally took. Strange, I didn't think you had to go thru all that to do a firmware update. Anyway, I am good to go now. Thanks!

Pushing reset button twice is not needed.

Just push the reset button (hold in until lights flash) then wait for router to reboot.

Upgrade the firmware.

Glad the FW finally took. I supposed you can use the button. Also you can use the web page tools for the router too. Can be found the same place as where you updated the router too. Hope it works well for you.

I used the web page first and it did not reset the router to factory settings. That is why I used the button on the router.

Total factory reset can only be done with the button on the back of the router.

Interesting. So what does the button on the interface marked "Restore To Factory Default" do exactly?

IT should do the same thing as the button on the back. Interesting that the web UI doesn't work. I use it on my 4500 when I do a reset. Hmm.  ???

Basically the same but if you want to also clear the ram and other hardware components of any cached data then the reset button or unplugging the router is the only way(s) you can do this.

well i just wasted a couple of hours screwing around with this.

its annoying the thing doesn't work as its supposed to, but thx to the comments in this thread i got my hw ver A2 from 1.33na to 1.35na

never had this issue in previous upgrades.

also, i see this option:

"Extra Wireless Protection
Extra protection for neighboring 11b wireless networks. Turn this option off to reduce the adverse effect of legacy wireless networks on 802.11ng performance. This option is available only when 802.11 Mode is set to an 11n Onlyoption. (Refer to the Setup → Wireless Settings → Manual Wireless Network Setup page.)"

...and i find it very poorly worded.  what is best for G/N networks?  with or without the checkmark?  i could care less about B networks and none are too close to me.

You have described exactly what it is 'supposed' to do. I can verify that it does not. As far as I could tell it does absolutely nothing, other than a reboot. I tried it several times and it does not return any setting that I checked to default values.
