Looking for any kind of suggestion here to get this back to at least 100mbps.

Story:
Was having network problems.  Replaced older netgear 10/100 router with Dir-655.  Things worked fine for a day or two (gigabit connection too).  Same problems as before starting happening again - then nothing worked at all.  Got another NiC figuring my onboard one had bit the bucket.  Things are good again.. except.. now I notice that I can't connect at 1.0Gbps.  Its only connecting at 10mbps.  I might be pushing the cable length limits for gigabit, but it did work for a while.

Things that are connected to the router:
1 Vista PC with gigabit capabilities - connected at 10mbps
1 XP PC with 10/100 Nic - Connected fine at 100mbps?!?
1 Haupauge Media Extender - 10/100 capable

The wireless radio is off as I have no wireless devices as of now - planned for the future.  Firmware is 1.11 upgraded from 1.10 - Hardware Version A3 if that matters.

Any ideas why I'm stuck at 10mbps from my vista machine?  I copy a lot of tv shows to my XP machine that are downloaded on the Vista machine and its brutal having to wait so long for them to copy over.

Replacement NIC is a:  Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family PCI Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0)

Cable quality and/or lenght jump to mind here. Using Cat5e or 6?

I live in a pre-wired condo.  So I don't really know what kind of cable is being used.  Assume the cheapest you can buy, so its most likely cat5.  It did work fine at 100 for a long time.. and even gigabit for at least a few months.  The cable is also probably quite long in length, but I really have no easy way of finding out exactly how long it is.  I would guess at least 25 feet long and 2 jacks in between computer & router.

Maybe there's a problem with the jack in the wall.

All of a sudden though?  After working for 3 or 4 years?  I guess it could be.  I just never really thought those things could go bad.  I'll have to try a more direct connection and see what happens I guess.

Something is causing static, that's for sure. Maybe mice started eating the cable somewhere inside the walls..

Check the wallplug, maybe one or more connections were pulled out of the socket. Have you tried forcing Gbit connections (not using 'auto')
If you want to determine the cause, get somebody with a Gbit capable laptop and connect. If he fails too, you know it is in the cable/sockect

I doubt its mice.. 2nd floor concrete condo building, but I guess mice can be pretty crafty.  I was thinking something might be causing static on the line somehow since this kind of just started not long ago.  I can't really replace the wire is the worst part, but can check the jacks.
