uPNP stops working when HD power managment is enabled
« on: January 17, 2011, 06:03:37 PM »

I've had a DNS-321 for well over a year now loaded with 2 x 1T Caviar Greens in Standard config.  I've enabled the power mgmt feature on the drives to hibernate after 5 minutes.  My understanding is that while streaming the music/photos/videos, the HD is being accessed so no hibernation is occurring during this time (as expected).  I've had no significant issues with this setup, except...

The issue I'm running into is that the uPNP service seems to "disappear" after about a day or more of non-use and HD hibernation.  I can still access the Volume_1 and Volume_2 share points (it takes a while for the drives to spin up initially -- about 20 seconds, but they do activate no problem), and I'm able continue to use the nas filesystem, but the uPNP service does not appear to "wakeup" again.

Even worse, the only RELIABLE solution I've been able to come up with is disabling the UPNP service, then re-enabling it (this appears to force a re-scan/refresh on the folders).

If I try a hard reboot, even that does not always get the uPNP service started even after waiting for 10 minutes after the unit restarts.  Its almost as if the uPNP file listing cache is lost after more than 24 hours of inactivity and HD hibernation, and needs to be rebuilt, but in the meantime the uPNP service cannot restart either for some reason.  I wonder if the auto-refresh that the uPNP service does to scan for new content from time to time, and the HD hibernation settings conflict?

Comments?  Could this be resolved with a firmware fix?

[edit - I leave the DNS-321 on 24/7]

I have a DNS-321 with two drives.   DLNA does not seem to work.  My Vista Windows Media server can see a DLNA drive hooked via USB to my linksys router(It's the one I was hopping to replace with this unit).  But Vista can't see this DLNA server at all, even though it can share the media drives.  I now see posts that say the 321 is not DLNA compliant.  Is that true or are they old posts?
