Connection to VOiP Phone & PSP
« on: August 21, 2008, 04:20:04 PM »

Tried searching for above subject in this forum but couldn't find an answer.  I'm having difficulty connecting my VOiP phone (Linksys CIT 400) and my PSP to my 655.  My VOiP phone connects the the router via a LAN but for some reason, it couldn't get an IP address from the router.  I checked the status on the admin page and it lists the phone as one of the LAN devices connected to the router.  But it seems that the router is not sending an IP address to the unit.  As for the PSP, I keep getting this error message "Connection error occurred.  A connection to the access point could not be established.  Check the security settings for the network and try again", despite ensuring that security settings in the PSP and the pre-shared key are typed correctly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

My router settings:

Firmware 1.10ww
Mixed n and g
Auto channel scan checked
Channel width - 20 Mhz
Invisible
WPA-Personal
Auto (WPA or WPA2)
TKIP and AES
Interval 3600

I can relate what I recently had to do to get my VoIP ATA to work through my DIR-655:

1. In the Advanced - Firewall Settings page, make sure SIP is unchecked in the ALG settings (last section on the page).  Then, try again.

My case was a little different, here's what I had to do:

It ended up that my ATA's WAN address was the same as my DIR-655's LAN address.  I changed my ATAs WAN IP address to 192.168.3.1 to avoid this conflict (this was done by logging into the ATA's web interface)

I then had to put the ATA in my router's DMZ, and had to give it a LAN IP address outside of my Router's LAN DHCP scope. Since my LAN DHCP scope ends at 192.168.2.199, I gave the ATA device LAN IP of 192.168.2.200 (again, done by logging into the ATA's web interface).

Since I've done this, my VoIP ATA works great behind the DIR-655.

Hello Sherlock,

Open up the userguide for your VOIP product:
http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&cid=1165633354987

If you look on pages 60-65 it will show you how to reset the network settings and also it will show you how to set a static IP of the device. Set an IP address of 192.168.0.50 and test it out.

As far as your PSP goes, make sure your current firmware version of it is compatible with WPA security. If not, upgrade the firmware on the PSP or change the security to WEP instead of WPA - Then give it a shot. You also should verify MAC Filtering is disabled under the advanced settings inside the router.

Best of Luck,

Russell

Thanks for the suggestions Russell.  I actually took one step further: I decided to reset my router to the default factory settings and connect my VOiP phone and PSP without any security.  My plan was to connect the devices first and work on customizing the router one step at a time.  This way I can spot the settings that won't work on either of the devices.

After doing this experiment I was able to successfully connect my VOiP phone (and assigned a static IP as suggested).  The latter works very well now behind the router (even with WPA-Personal security on).  However, I wasn't as lucky with my PSP.  For some reason (even with factory default setting) my PSP cannot connect.  The same error keeps popping up:  "A connection error has occured.  A connection to the access point could not be established.  Check the security settings for the network and try again." And that's without any security configured!  Interestingly, my PSP can "see" the router whenever it scans for an access point.  But whenever I try to connect, it gives me the same error.  By the way, both my 655 and my PSP have the latest firmware.

All of my wired and wireless devices have so far connected successfully with my 655, except for my PSP.  I feel I'm running out of solutions.  Is there something else I failed to try?  Appreciate the help.  Thanks.

My PSP works fine and I use auto security (WPA,WPA2) plus mac address filtering.

I was thinking that it might be because of a technical problem with my PSP, so I decided to test my connection with a friend's router (Linksys) and it connected successfully.  The wireless setting of my 655 right now is mixed G and N, but I did try setting it to G only - still didn't work.  :(
