Since upgrading to the new firmware 1.5, looks like my harddrives inside the DNS-323 are continuously spinning.
They stop briefly, and immediatelly start turning again.
The unit is hot.
All the additional services/servers are turned off (ftp, upn, etc)

Why is this? How can I make the unit to go to standby and only become active when needed?

Do you use the unit as a print server?
Go into the status page, there should be a button to clear the print queue - click it and see if that solves your problem.

I have the same problem.  To rephrase the question above: What settings will prevent my 323 from going into standby mode?  I have the latest firmware with BitTorrent support and I'm running UPnP with my PS3.  I'm concerned about the unit getting too hot.

Anything that required the DNS-323 to be called upon to do a task. accessing data, backups, print jobs, iTunes server and UPnP AV media server if being accessed by a device on the network.

I'd just like to emphasize that the offending process need not be on the DNS-323 - I had Memeo running on a desktop configured to backup to the DNS-323, and then reformatted the drives in the DNS-323 and not reconfigured Memeo, so Memeo would keep on searching for it's folders, which did not exist, and that would prevent the DNS_323 from going into standby.

The quick & easy way to determine if it is an internal or external process that is preventing the unit from going into standby is to disconnect the network cable and wait for the standby period to elapse, watch closely, because it is possible for it go into standby and then "wake up" immediately after.

I did what you suggested fordem and disconnected the network cable.  Also cleared the print queue.  The unit still didn't go to standby mode.  Is there anything else in the configuration of my 323 that keeps the disk spinning?  Thanks.

Did you install any software to the unit or funplugs? Are you using the unit for anything other then data storage?

No I didn't install any software or funplugs.  I am using Upnp and Bittorrent (but no scheduled downloads for the latter; I also don't keep it open for seeding).  I also have the latest firmware (1.05).

Try disabling the UPnP AV media server and iTunes server and see if it is now able to go into power management. This is just for troubleshooting the options should be able to be used and still go into standby.

My unit finally went into sleep mode after I disabled the Upnp server.  It's unfortunate that I have to do this for the unit to go into power management.  This means I have to configure the unit every time I have to use it with my PS3.

Hmm that is odd the DNS-323 should still go into stand by if nothing is accessing the UPnP AV media server. It looks like the PS3 does something to keep the connection alive that stops the DNS-323 from powering  down the drives.

Actually, I just discovered something.  When I enabled the UPnP server and selected my target folder (I don't use the root directory so I always uncheck the root directory box) I decided to refresh the server and pressed the refresh button.  After 5 minutes, the unit went to sleep mode!  So even if the UPnP server is enabled, the unit is now going into standby.  Interestingly, when I select any refresh setting other than "none", the unit does NOT go into sleep mode.
