okay to start off my computer died a few days ago because of a windows failure/flaw/sabotage so i switched to unbuntu but my old wireless adapter didnt work so i got a new one without checking if it was ubuntu compatable. i searched the net and found some quick how-to's to get it to work but none help as I have only gotten as far as downloading three files needed before they start talking some alien or dead language and i get lost, the computer that needs the usb wireless adapter has no internet right now. can anyone help me with a good step by step guide on how to get the adapter to even show up under "networks" or even better get it working? i'm new to ubuntu......

I don't personally use Ubuntu or the DWA-130, so I am speaking from generalistic experience not specific experience.

Looking at all the Google hits I can find it appears that DWA-130 appears to require NDIS-Wrapper at this time.  Below is the Ubuntu NDIS-Wrapper How-To.  This is the best I am going to be able to do for you over the internets.

Now for the even less comforting part, wireless in Linux is an amazingly simple procedure compared to yesteryear, it is still not ready for most users though.  You have a rough road ahead of you.

Also, you mention that your wireless didn't work so you procured a new wireless adapter.  Is the DWA-130 the new or old adapter, and what make/model/chipset is the other adapter.  It is distinctly possible that it may be an easier or better supported chipset.

i have no clue thats why i got the new one so I could know what drivers to get, i do know that it came with our bellsouth dsl pacakge from back at home.

Please have it connected and run the command lspci (if it is a PCI card) or lsusb (if it is a USB card) from a terminal.

Show me what that command displays and that will tell me what I need to know about it.

If it tells you that you don't have rights or can't find that command you may need to run sudo lspci or sudo lsusb instead.  I know that Ubuntu has a weird permission system and I am not certain how automatic it is.

If that still shows no such command you may need to ensure that the pci-utils and usb-utils packages are installed.

okay figured most of it out and followed the guide, got that done, and the thing still will not show up under network manager?

Well the good news is that it looks like your old adapter will also work under NDIS-Wrapper, I even have 1 report of it working under Ubuntu.  This report also has his direct post install directions and what appears to be links to drivers.  Could be a goldmine.

how do you know me? anyway I got up to well past the driver checks.... still no go though.

also installing with modprobe command and the other given with the ubuntu guide didn't work, got some error message i'll see if i can bring it up.

Cool, that error will help.

I don't know you, your hostname and login on your Ubuntu box were gendoikari87, and I am not completely unfamiliar with Neon Genesis.

I, too, had the same problem with my D-Link RangeBooster N DWA-142 in Ubuntu 9.10. After much web searching and frustration, I decided on a cunningly simple solution... write it off as a learning experience in futility, spend the $60 required to get something that works and give the old adapter to someone I dislike. For me, there is no happiness in spending a huge amount of time trying to configure something as deeply flawed in its construction as that adapter.

Hi Evonwells,

     DWA-130 A1 use MRVW245.SYS  and NETMW245.INF with Ndiswrapper, DWA-130 Rev B use Rt2870.inf and Rt2870.sys with Ndiswrapper. Rev C has Linux driver from D-Link. Obtain drivers from D-Link, extract installation file with 7-Zip, use driver for XP. I hope this help.
PS. Linux Mint use Ubuntu kernel and is easier to set up in my opinion.
