My DNS-321 seems to forget the Network Access settings every time the box is rebooted. Granted, that shouldn't happen often but still I it's some work to redo my access settings every time. Anyone heard of this before?

I'm using the unit in Standard (Individual Disks) mode with two WDC 200GB drives.

Any suggestions on what I could try?

Presumably this refers to the Network Access settings in the advanced tab - where you set up who has access to what.

Did this start happening before or after you used fun_plug to modify the configuration?

Regardless, I used a funplug to go in and run pftpd with a passive ports range and that works fine for me.

Correct, the Network Access in the Advanced tab.

Yes now that I think of it it was happening right out the box because initially I still had to go and set permissions after a reboot. FTP access and everything else doesn't seem to have any issues. I tried to experiment with taking myself in and out of groups, adding comments and the sorts. Just messing with various combinations when adding the share.

Odd to say the least.

I'm also using a single Seagate 300MB drive in my DNS-321 and have the same problem. My "Network Access List" settings disappear upon rebooting. I called D-Link tech support about this issue today and they confirmed its a known bug which they're assessing for a fix in a future firmware update.

Their suggested work-around is to temporarily put in a second disk drive, make your "Network Access List" changes and then remove the second disk drive.

When pressed regarding the availability of said firmware update they would provide no details or ETA. You can add this to the known list of DNS-321 bugs.

I do plan on adding a second 300MB drive but that's going to require moving my current main PC WinXP installation to another hard drive in the next few weeks so I was really hoping for a better work-around.

I assume you mean a single 300GB seagate drive for this setup. Can you please describe your network access settings? For instance how many users/groups you are using and shares. Also does this happen every reboot?

One more thing, do you have the Case # for the phone call you had with D-Link Technical Support?

Yes, I currently have a single 300MB Seagate drive. My network access settings are very simple right now (tired of re-entering a complex setup at each reboot):

  Users: shareuser1, ftpuser1
  Groups: private

  Share:share Volume_1/share
  User/Group: shareuser1
  Comment: Network Share
  Oplocks: no
  Map: no
  R/W: Read Only

The reason for the case# is too look up any troubleshooting that had been done. This is in fact not a 'known' issue to D-Link and has been fully tested in single and multiple drive configurations.

It will be re-tested again today and you should get some results a little later.

I reported this issue a few weeks ago.  My problem was fixed once I put a second drive in.  I am also waiting for the firmware update

I have 2 drives and my shares are gone after reboot also.  I'd like to be able to take this box with me to a friend's house and plug it in and know that I can tap into it with an xbox without having to use a PC to redo the shares.
And what about the other firmware problems?
- jumbo packet support
- restoring settings from backup file kills web interface permanently (requires paperclip reset)
- incremental backups don't seem to be very incremental (all 30 gigs of music are copied new every time this backup schedule kicks off - not a good way to extend drive life)
- web gui weirdness in backup schedules (if you create a schedule with the incremental box checked, then edit that schedule later, the incremental box won't be checked UNLESS you mouseover the URL text field - then it checks itself... weird)
- backup schedule status (always shows question mark before and after a job has run... never shows success even though it completes fine)
- DDNS updater (after enabling DDNS for DynDns my domain kept disappearing from my DynDns account... I suspect the DNS-321 is submitting too many updates which may cause DynDns to drop my domain)

I believe all of these have been covered in 1.01. We are working diligently on a firmware release but probably atleast another week or two before we can look at releasing an update.
