Incremental Backup problem
« on: September 17, 2008, 01:10:05 PM »

I have several download jobs defined, each with the Incremental Backup box checked. On a couple of the directories, it does exactly what I would expect of it. It checks to see if there are any new or changed files and copies these to the DNS-321. Other backup jobs just go ahead and copy all of the files in that directory every time, regardless of if it has changed or not. This is causing a LOT of traffic on my network, and I lose any timestamp information from the original file.

Also, when I open up an existing job, it does not show the Incremental Backup checkbox being checked, even though this is checked before saving the backup job.

On your jobs that are doing the incremental backup properly when you go back and open the setting for that backup does incremental backup remain checked?

I don't know for sure, as the DNS-321 deleted all of my backup jobs, probably when the power went out. I think that the incremental backup checkbox was NOT checked though when I went back to edit the jobs.

So on the jobs that you report were doing the incremental backup properly the incremental back check box was not checked when you go back to edit the settings?

If I remember correctly, I tested this when I found it. I set up a job where I made sure that I hade the increment box checked, and when I went back to verify the job, the box was NOT checked.

I also checked that the directory names or file names might have been the problem. I set up directories with no spaces in them, no capital letters, etc, but could not find a pattern as to why some backups worked and some didn't. I haven't checked it lately to see if they are working correctly or not. Will check tonight.

It appears that the "Incremental" checkbox is saved and is recalled only up to the first time that it is run. When it is resaved with the next start time, it doesn't save the incremental flag.

It speaks volumes that I have to do troubleshooting to this level, and in the time that I've owned these two units, not a single solution has come from D-Link. I doubt I'll be buying another D-Link component if this is the level of service that I can expect.
