Extender Drops Connection
« on: September 17, 2008, 09:55:49 PM »

My DSM-750 extender drops the connection to VMC after 30 minutes exactly.
Then I have to set it up all over again with a new code. It does not matter if I am playing a movie, music or letting it sit idle it still drops off at 30 minutes after setup completes.

Dsm-750 hard wired to HP Vista Laptop.
Latest DSM firmware.
McAfee Firewall off or ON, no difference.
Latest drivers loaded for Laptop.
Disabled all power saving.

I have scoured the Web for solutions and see that various people have this problem with different extenders. I have tried numerous suggested fixes and nothing works. Any suggestions would be appreciated as to what is causing the timeout.

Thanks, Hugh

It's most likely an issue with your router and not with the 750.  Which router are you using?  I've heard of many people who are using a VoIP telephone system and experience the same sort of problem with dis-connects, and it usually comes down to a timing-out issue within the firmware the router.  Check your settings.

The DSM-750 is hardwired directly to the Laptop with no router and it still drops out after 30 minutes. The router is out of the setup.

Further info:

When the DSM-750 disconnects after 30 minutes it shows in the Vista PC WMC Extender settings as "set up but not available".

Shutting down the Vista PC WMC and then restarting it causes the DSM-750 to reconnect and show as "ready to use" in the Vista PC WMC Extender settings.

After 30 minutes the DSM-750 again disconnects and shows as "set up but not available" in the PC WMC extender settings.

This cycle can be repeated endlessly.

Further info:

Extender session established start at 1:33:34

Event logs at time of disconnect.

2:03:15
The Pnp-x Ip bus enumerator was successfully added for device (Mcx4 DSM-750).

2:03:15
The Pnp-x Ip bus enumerator was successfully removed for device (Mcx4 DSM-750).

2:03:18
The event log for Security indicates "User initiated logoff" at the time of disconnect.
The User is Mcx4 which is the DSM-750.

That points to the Ip Bus Enumerator service as the problem maybe, since the service was running already?  Any ideas would be appreciated.

Have you tried it from another PC preferably one that has not had any anti-virus software installed?

"Have you tried it from another PC preferably one that has not had any anti-virus software installed? "

I have only one Vista HP6650 Laptop (powered and Hard wired) which I use as my media center.

I uninstalled My McAfee anti-virus and firewall. No change.

I discovered that if I reboot the PC leaving the Extender on then the Extender can log on to WMC without putting in a new key. At 30 minutes it disconnects. The only way to get the Extender to see the PC again is to reboot the PC.

I also updated the Nvidia Nforce LAN drivers to one of the latest Nvidia OEM releases and enabled "away mode". No change. None of the power saving settings are enabled.

The system logs show:
The PnP SSDP service starts establishing the Parent Extender discovery and giving a uuid.
Pnp then establishes a "parent device" which is the uuid of the extender.
Then PnP establishes a "child device" and a uuid is given for the same IP and mac address as the Extender.
At 30 minutes exactly Pnp SSDP service starts and adds the "parent device" uuid again, which it does even though the parent device is still installed.
PnP then removes the "parent device" Extender uuid.
One second later "the shell process exited unexpectedly".
Next "user initiated log off"

This has got to be one of the most frustrating issues I have ever dealt with. I am sure that it will turn out to be some "simple" setting somewhere. Two months on this and going nowhere though!!!!!!!! The thirty minutes exactly is what drives me nuts.

I'm just curious. I'm guessing your HP notebook only has one ethernet port connection, right? So, your frequently changing connections to either your modem or your DSM-750? Is it possible that Media Center is getting confused on which device is connected to the machine? How are you getting your internet if the DSM-750 is connected?

Yes only one Ethernet Port on the HP. When I test a direct connection of the Extender to the PC I do not have any Internet connection. I only do this once in a while to confirm that the Router, NAS, or Xp cpu is not the issue. I play a video file off the Laptop HD. It still drops out at 30 minutes.

I have an XP Desktop cpu connected to a Linksys WRT150n router with a DLink DNS323 NAS which I use for Internet.

Turn of your power management settings on your PC and see if that is the issue.

The good news is that it is now working after installing Network Magic.

The bad news is that I do not know what settings made by Network Magic got it fixed.

I now stay rock solid connected! No more 30 minute disconnects.

Also for the first time WMP11 showed up on the Extender as a network share in "My Media" right next to my DNS323 share. I also had to use the "Remote Share" registry fix posted on a recent post to get the shared folders to show up on the Extender when using WMP11.

Thanks for all the previous suggestions.
