DIR-655 REV.B No Way to disable SIP ALG
« on: January 19, 2011, 11:53:57 PM »

I have a D-Link DIR-655 REV.B and have no luck getting my Nettalk Duo device to work with it. I have tried forwarding all of the needed ports and even placing the device in the DMZ but can't get it to work with this router. I have noticed that this router has no way to disable SIP ALG which should eliminate the issues I am having. Why would D-Link give us no way to disable this "feature" that is known to cause issues with VOIP devices??? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

No, I've looked everywhere and that setting is nowhere to be found. A google search showed me that is a known issue with Rev.B of this router. Why won't d-link fix this???
Edit:
I think you're seeing the SPI checkbox. That is a totally different setting.

No, I was looking in the Firewall settings/Application Level Gateway (ALG) Configuration. I'm using the DLink emulator. It shows the ALG setting at the bottom. I presume they might have removed it in Rev B for some reason. What happens if you change your STYLE settings in IE to NONE, and go into the routers web page and check? Doing this seems to reveal hidden options. There is a post about this on this board I think.

I believe it was posted in the past the ALG was disabled by default on the B version router.  Do a forum search ofr SIP ALG and there should be more info on this.

Thanks FurryNutz, I tried your suggestion but no luck.
Davevt31, I searched and see a bunch of single, no reply posts and those that do have replies only suggest that SIP ALG is turned off but nothing definitive. Considering that people are having VOIP issues from a broad spectrum of VOIP providers with REV.B of this router suggests that something is definitely broken in the current firmware. I am really hoping to see an updated firmware that fixes these issues. Please D-Link, fix this.

I have the 655 Rev B, and it works flawlessly with the NetTalk Duo. Turn everything off, reboot modem (wait), restart router (wait), restart Duo (you should get ring back in around 10-15 seconds). Then reserve the Duo ip address on the 655.

I have tried this many, many times before with no luck. Just for giggles I tried it one more time, still no luck. Yolu must be lucky because this will not work for me at all.

Well, if gplungs is working, you might ask him if he could save off his configuration to file and send it to you and see if that does anything. If one is working, might mean that there is a possible configuration setting were missing.

Does the Duo work when plugged directly into the modem (thus, bypassing the router) ??

No, but it never has. I was told by a Nettalk customer service rep that the Duo must be used with a router (yeah, makes no sense to me either). I had the Duo working with an old Netgear Prosafe router but the range on it was horrible so I bought the DIR-655 to increase the range. It did that too bad my Duo will not cooperate with it.

Just noticed the 2.01 update. I've installed it and quickly tried the Duo with SIP ALG on and off and neither seems to be working. It's late and I have to work in the morning so I can't continue meesing with it now. I'll try a little more extensively tomorrow and post my results.

After some messing around with no luck, I decided to reset the router to factory settings (I had initially saved my config before the update and reapplied it after but was still having the same issue). Anyway my Nettalk Duo seems to finally be working with this router. Hopefully this issue will not arise again.

Update:
After cleaningup around my desk, I somehow managed to accidentally unplug my Nettalk Duo and now it will not connect again. This has become very frustrating.

With the network cable from the Duo to the router installed, and the phone connected to the Duo, power down the duo wait 15 seconds, re-apply power to the Duo, you should get now have a blinking green light on the Duo and get a ring back on the phone shortly. If that does not work...Make sure all your connections are good. Then, with all you components hooked up (including the duo with the phone hooked up to it), power down everything off, reboot modem (wait), restart router (wait), restart Duo (you should get ring back in around 10-15 seconds).
