DNS-321 Ftp stopped working
« on: January 20, 2011, 11:51:55 AM »

I ahve a wierd problem. Yesterday, my DNS-321 stopped working. I have a DIR-615 router and when I go into the router to unlock the port, the device list does not show my DNS-321. It shows everything else, but not the DNS321. I checked everything and it still is setup like before, but cannot get this ftp to work from outside my network. I can still access the dns locally and everything local is fine.
Any suggestions as to how to get the remote access working again?
Thanks
Scott

You can access DNS locally, but can you FTP locally? If you can FTP locally did you check if the IP address of the DNS changed? Normally, your router needs a port-forwarding rule to be able to access FTP from outside. There should be something on the router which forwards port 21 (external port) to port 21 (internal port) to your DNS private IP address. If you don't have a hard-coded IP address on the DNS, or if you don't have a static DHCP entry on your router, then the FTP port-forwarding rule will break whenever your router reboots and assigns the IP addresses differently.

Got everything set with the port forwarding rule. But I didn't look at the external ip. I opened the router back up and it now has a different ip. I'll give that one a try and see what happens. Is this something that the router is going to do all the time? Or is there any way for me to give it a permanent ip.
Thanks for the help-I appreciate it.

If you are assigned a dynamic IP address by your ISP, your IP address can change. Thankfully there's a solution- DDNS. Register with a free service such as dyndns.org and register a host name such as mynas.dyndns.org. Then configure your router to login to this account and update the IP address they have on file. Then you can use your host name instead of IP.
