question on hard drive compatibility

Can you tell me if the sticky at the top of this board on hard drive compatibility is up-to-date?  I am not a tech expert, but looking at the list of 1TB or 1.5TB compatibility for the DNS-323, it seems pretty small, and when looking at the prices on Amazon, some of the models appear to have new versions that have been released. 

Here are a couple examples where I'm curious to know if they are compatible or not (note I will not be using RAID):

1) Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB ST31500341AS is on the list, but what about 1.0TB ST31000528AS, which is about $15-20 cheaper (and all the capacity I need)?

2) Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB WD10000CSRTL is on the list, but Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB WDBAAY0010HNC-NRSN appears to be a newer model (according to Amazon). 

3) Are the Western Digital WD10EARS drives compatible if not in RAID (and just JBOD)?  They are only $60, so a good price, but don't want to buy if not compatible. 

Please advise.

I would stay with a supported drive.  Some users have gotten the WD ..EARS drives to work and they have listed their steps on this list.

That's the link/post I referenced in my original post.  My questions are about that link though and specifically around how up-to-date it is given that at least some of the drives are not sold anymore b/c they have been replaced by newer versions.  

Another related question would be that some of the drives listed in that link are listed just for a single capacity (i.e. 1.5TB).  However, the drive is also produced as a 1TB drive (Which is cheaper and meets my needs).  Yet that smaller drive is NOT listed.  So my question was whether these "sister" drives would also work (I would think they would, but can't understand why they would not be listed).  

I'm looking for clarification around those two issues specfically, and even more specficially the 3 examples I gave in my original post above.  Thanks!

Based on my readings, the problem disks have 4K sectors.   Search for "323 + 4K".

As for similar disks that are not listed, they may not have been tested and therefore are not listed.  Who knows when the list was last updates.

Any standard non advanced format SATA drive should work.

D-Link should step-up and update the list. There is only one 2TB disk listed as being compatible and it is not even produced anymore by WD.

I also want to upgrade the hard disks to 2TB but I can't find any compatible "green" drives. I'm looking to find a 2TB disk with low power consumption, unfortunately WD EARS are not compatible because of 4K sector. Any other suggestions?

The WD EARS are Advanced Format Drives (AFD) which are not recommended for NAS.  Although some users have had success with them, I would opt for a different solution.

You can use 4K drives so long as the the partitions are properly aligned. Once they're aligned the NAS shouldn't have any issues. The drawback is that you wouldn't be able to use these drives in RAID setup because then you would need the NAS to format the drives...which it doesn't do properly.

Dlink can easily fix this by updating the kernel since the newer linux kernels properly format and align the partitions upon creation.

Hrm.... I wonder if the AFDs would work in RAID if the drives had the jumper pins (7 & 8) shorted?  And then the NAS could format. 

I know this is off topic since the the OP specifically said that RAID would not be used.

Perhaps I will give this a try in the future.

I'm using 2TB ST32000542 in raid no issues (after 6months). These are low power, spin at 5900 supposely without to much much performance hit.

Did you use the jumper to align the drives? Or did you just install the drives and let the NAS format them?

It's hard to predict when one or both of the drives may start experiencing performace degradation...but when it does hit, it really really sucks. Everything from supposed drive failure, poor R/W speeds, etc. You're lucky that you haven't experienced it yet.

Just stuck them in wasn't thinking about 4k drives whan I got these.

If you haven't purchased yet, I can help with some of your questions.  I bought the WDBAAY0010HNC-NRSN from Best Buy, since it didn't have the EARS in the model number.  Turns out it is actually the WD10EARS, which I noticed through the static bag before I opened it.  I took it back and got the Seagate ST310005N1A1AS-RK, which I actually think is the ST31000528AS, just with the cable.  I haven't had any issues yet, but I've only been using it a couple days.  I also only have the one drive so far, but plan on picking up the bare drive probably from Amazon soon.
