Hi,

Sorry for what may be stupid questions but I am really an amature where router settings come.

I am trying to do two things and need some help.  

1) I am trying to do some port opening for use with performance with Xbox Live.  I found a website dealing in port forwarding and it says I should make the changes under the section called "Port Forwarding" in the admin console.  Is this correct?  It is confusing because "Virtual Server" seems to described in the manual as almost the same thing.

2) I am also trying to get better performance with media streaming in Windows 7 and Windows Media Player.  Windows 7 is telling me to map external ports 443 and 44518 to internal port 10245.   I am not sure where or how to accomplish this.  I don't see how I can do this in the "Port Forwarding" section and when I tried to do it in the "Virtual Server" section I get an error when I try mapping 2 external to the same internal.  

Both my Xbox and main computer have static IP addresses so I have that covered and everything else is working fine.

Any advice would be great.  Thanks.

For setting up gaming on XBL, check out the gaming and gamefuel sticky in the DGL-4500 forum. The data used is the same however you need to use QoS section in your router for this.
Gaming and Gamefuel for XBL.

For opening up ports I would use either Virtual Server or Port Forwarding for this. Try either.

Let us know how it goes.

I guess where I am really lost is #2.   Any help there anyone?

Sorry, I guess you are referring to #2 in your OP.

I would try using Port Forwarding option on the router. Enter in the IP address of the PC and use the port numbers in the Public and Private. Public would be the 443 and 44518 and Private would be the 10245 I believe.

I did mean #2 in my original post.  Sorry for not being clear.

In the DIR-655, the only place I see Public vs. Private is under Virtual Server.   Each line only takes 1 public mapped to 1 private and you can't do multiples like in Port Forwarding.

Problem is that if I do one line mapping 44518 to 10245 and a second line mapping 443 to 10245 I get an error message.   It says:

'W7 Media1' [TCP:44518]->192.168.0.100/10245 conflicts with 'W7 Media 2' [TCP:443]->192.168.0.100/10245.
****

W7 Media 1 and W7 Media 2 are the names of the entries and 192.168.0.100 is the IP of the computer I am trying to make the changes to.

The problem is that they show with a Linksys.  Scroll about 3/4 to the bottom for what I am talking about.

What happens if you try using Port Forwarding options?

Port Forwarding doesn't seem to give me an option for inbound vs. outbound -- just the TCP and UDP ports I want to open and on what IP address.   

Now I could be a total idiot and missing something completely obvious.

Well it's worth trying, just put in the ports. You might have to put in multiple lines for each port.
