Nortel VPN + DIR-655 Problems
« on: September 19, 2008, 09:03:22 AM »

Hi all.  New to the forums and love the router, just can't get VPN to connect   :'(

Have tried:
- Virtual Servers (need ports 500 & 4500, UPD)
- Port Forwarding (500/4500)
- Pretty sure I've tried all combinations of the above, plus any/all of the following checked/unchecked: SPI, PPTP, IPsec
- Resetting to defaults and starting the above all over again

What I have:
- XPSP2
- router is hardware version A3, firmware version 1.20
- PC wired to router (for now anyway -- will get brave & go wireless after I get this resolved)
- DCM-202 cable modem

Sure don't want to go the DMZ route.  VPN works great if I connect the PC directly to the modem.  I'm really hoping one/some of you can help me before I return this for something else (which is what my work Admin said I should do).

Thanks

Our company uses the Nortel Contivity VPN and I've been using it without issue with my DIR-655.  I believe the solution is to simply untick the IPSec (VPN) box under the Application Level Gateway section of the Firewall settings.

Thanks for your reply, cop.

It was something else (and it makes me feel silly): norton Internet security.

Not sure why it decided to interfer with VPN, but I ended up writing a rule to allow comm. to/from the router for the rqd ports, & it worked great with standard settings.

Ahh antivirus/pc Firewall strikes again.
Silly Norton/McAfee. When will they learn.
Try Securespot 2.0 with the 1.21 firmware. See if you like that.

With Vista's own firewall, a well-configured modem and a basic router firewall set up you probably won't need an extra firewall on your PC. Good anti-virus/anti-adware should be sufficient. Saves you a lot of a. money and b. lag and annoyances. But that's my opinion.
