Streaming/Downloading/Uploading Issue
« on: January 23, 2011, 04:54:22 PM »

Hello,
First off, thanks to all that read this for your time and input. So here is my issue, about a week ago my router started acting up (rev B 2.00). I have owned it about 2 months now with no issues.

So around a week ago I noticed that my wireless internet had slowed immensely while trying to watch netflix. We're talking from an almost instant click to watch to what is now 20 minutes to buffer maybe 3 minutes of video before repeating the buffer. Downloading/uploading photos has also screeched to a stop. Any webpages that a large amount of data are trying to load also take an ungodly time to load.

Now there were no alterations to my router settings since I first set it up. On that note; I was running it as g/n with no security on it. (There is also no unauthorized access to my network)

*note* This is an issue only w. my wireless.

If anyone has some insight for me please let me know. Again, thank to all that took the time to read this.

Tim

Is this on a PC or a media box like Roku? Can you see what the connection speed is? Did you look at the wireless status page on the router config page? (I don't know anything, but this might be information that can help others point you in the right direction.)

Sorry I should have explained that better. I have issues when trying to access the wireless on my laptop/ps3. As for my internet information per the wireless tab: Rate for the 2 units are 130M and 54M. Some additional info is:
Wireless Radio :     Enabled
802.11 Mode :     11bgn
Channel Width :     20/40 MHz
Channel :     11
WISH :     Inactive

I noticed on my DIR-655 rev. A4 a similar issue. When I went to check how fast the wifi clients were connected at I found clients connected at puny speeds like 1Mbps, 5Mbsp, 18Mbps, etc.

I did three things:
1) I set the router to use wireless g only (when the problem was evident it was set to g + n).
2) Clients were generally connecting at 54Mbps now but in some areas they would still drop to very low speeds. I then did a wifi heat map of the house using http://www.ekahau.com/products/heatmapper/overview.html and found the area where we used wifi the most was getting a poor wifi signal.
3) I had an old Netgear WGR614 v9 router lying around and in the area with the poor wifi signal we set that up as a wifi repeater and now all the wifi clients are connecting at 54Mbps or at worst 48Mbps. It isn't stellar speeds compared to newer routers that can do 300 or even 450Mbps but I don't notice any issues now, everything is much more snappy. Since we only have one client in the house that can even do wifi N I'm happy with getting 54Mbps.

You might consider doing a heatmap and possibly you are having a similar issue.

Also, you might grab netstumbler and install that on a laptop and check what other wifi networks are nearby and what channel they are using. Possibly your router is also using a heavily used channel in your neighborhood and you can move to a less congested channel in the router settings.
