Try starting with only 1 disk in the system, formatting it as standard, then remove it and do the same with the other disk.

I do not know what Error Code 502 means at the moment but the above should work.

Sorry if I get back to this topic but has anyone of you tried one of the following disks witht the DNS-320?
Which one would you advise to buy?

1) Samsung 2TB SpinPoint F4EG HD204UI/Z4 (this one I understand works fine)
Interface: SATA3
Cache: 32MB
Speed: 5400 rpm

2) Seagate 2TB Barracuda Green ST2000DL003
Interface: SATA-600
Cache: 64MB
Speed: 7200RPM
Spindle Speed: 5900 rpm

3) Western Digital 2TB Caviar Green WD20EARS
Interface: SATA-300
Cache: 64MB
Spindle Speed: 5400 rpm

Id's suggest anything but Caviar Green EARS drives...

But!.. To share my own experience...

Bought my DNS-321 months ago, along with a single HDD. Put it in the left bay.

Everything went fine. Months later, the 1tb drive is full; I go to my local store to get a new 2tb drive.
Come back home, I do a google search to get "official" instructions to do that, because I remember about horror stories of people formatting the wrong drive and all...
I find all those posts about WD EARS drives... DAMN!.. this is what I just bought!!
I go to my local store to get my money back -They are surprised about the problem but they agree.

Then I ordered a Seagate drive from the internet.
Meanwhile, I figured it would be safer to flip the first drive from left to right. ok.
So, when I finally got my new HDD, I opened the NAS and pulled the old drive out..

To find out it was a 1TB WD EARS drive!!! =)))

Put it in the right bay, put the new Seagate one in Left bay...

Everything went A-OK. Format took about 40 minutes, and I was good to go.

It is my understanding that the main compatibility issue with the "EARS" drives (WD10EARS, WD15EARS, WD20EARS, etc) is that the partitions and file systems must be lined up with the 4K sectors they use internally, otherwise you will experience suboptimal read/write performance. If it not lined up the drive will "work" but will be slower as each file system block/cluster access (which by chance is 4k in size on most systems) will require accessing two of the internal 4k sectors instead of just one.

Annoyingly it appears that the DNS-321 currently does not know how to make this adjustment, and the jumper these drives use to offset the simulated 512byte sectors by one is a hack that may or may not work depending on the partition's location. There may not even be a way for OS software to automatically detect if a drive uses 4k sectors (to the OS and controller hardware the drive pretends the sectors are 512 bytes for compatibility)

The worst part is that large low-power hard drives without the 4k sectors are harder and harder to find. Even the other manufacturers are using 4K sectors drives that require this special alignment. According to various specs the Western Digital Green "EADS" drives (WD10EADS, WD15EADS, WD20EADS, etc) still use 512 byte sectors and appear to be intended for NAS or embedded devices, but they are more expensive and less common.

The 2TB WD20EADS is actually listed as a supported compatible drive for the DNS-323 (should apply to DNS-321 also) on this thread: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=672.0  although it looks like that list has not been updated in a while. Logically the 1TB WD10EADS and 1.5TB WD15EADS models should also be 100% compatible.

That's not true;

WD is the only one to use this kind of alignement.

The other 3 (we might say 2, WD bought Hitachi yesterday) companies still use 512k sectors.
(only Seagate and Samsung are left, but Hitachi branded drives will be easy to be found for a still a couple months for sure)

Samsung F4 2TB has 4k sectors, and I think their latest 2.5" 1TB also have 4k sectors. They call it AFT (Advanced Format Technology).

Yesterday I bought DNS-320 and I can say that it is working well with:

- 2x Hitachi's 5K3000 2TB (HDS5C3020ALA632) set to RAID 1  :)

Format went quickly, without glitches.
Transfers via SMB is maximum what I cat get on my 100Mbit lan adapter  ;D
(DNS-320 fitted with firmware 2.0).

What firmware version?

Did you check that there wasn't any dust or fluff that might get pushed into the drive connector when you inserted the new drive?

What do the status LEDs show?

In other words, a little more information helps us to help you since we can't actually look at your unit.

Hello,

sorry for the litle amount of information
I'll tell you know all that I know
Firmware version is 2.03

It was another HDD in that location I only wanted to replace it, and I I've cleaned the dust

The led of the Left HDD is amber when I start the NAs, but in about a minute it turns yellow, and I get the above messagge in the logs.

I've tested the HDD with the smart test from NAS and it passed.

I'm using 2 hdd
Right - Seagate - ST2000DM001-9YN1 - which is working since one year
-
Left - TOSHIBA - DT01ACA200 - which is the new one

can you please help?

Thank you

The fact the status LED shows the drive has failed calls for more that just reading the SMART information of the drive (from what we have seen the NAS does nothing other than read the SMART firmware data rather than run the smart tests on the drive).

You need to test the drive out of the unit.  To do this you require a USB/SATA caddy or adapter and the Toshiba disk test software.
Take the drive and put it in the caddy or attach it to the adapter (make sure the caddy or adapter has an independent power supply)
Install the disk test software on your PC then plug in the USB attached disk.
Run the set of disk tests to find out if the disk is in fact good or bad.  If there is a problem with the disk return it for replacement under warranty.
If the disk checks out as good then there is some sort of problem with your NAS.  Sorry I can't say what that problem might be but we have found the majority of problems with disks not being read properly is down to a problem with the disk socket in the unit and usually requires the unit to taken apart to fix.

Problem solved removing Volume_1, formatting Volume_2, restart that replugging Volume_1 in the same slot as it was first

Thanks all for your help
