NEWB Question: Wireless G to N
« on: January 25, 2011, 08:31:26 AM »

I have been running a Linksys Wireless G router in a home office environment for a couple of years now and connect up to 6 Windows laptops and a wireless printer to the system without issues. Due to a change in my employer's system, I was instructed to replace my Linksys Wireless G router with the D-Link DIR-825.

Although I originally set up the previous system, I did it once about 2 years ago and have not had to "play" around with it since, so my networking knowledge is very minimal. Because of this, I want to make sure I am somewhat familiar with the installation routine before beginning to minimize potential problems.

In reading the Quick Start manual for the DIR-825, it says to insert the CD into a machine that is connected to the internet. Can I do this in my laptop (XP Pro) that is currently connected wirelessly to the Linksys router or should I plug a network cable directly into my laptop from my modem? I'm thinking that if I try to do it wirelessly, there might be some confusion from the already installed Linksys files.

Secondly, will the fact that I am currently running the Linksys system and all the laptops are configured to work with this, create any issues with a "clean install" of the D-Link system? Anything I should know about or be aware of? Any changes to make prior, during or after installation of the D-Link software?

Also, my laptops are a mixture of XP Pro, Vista and Windows 7 machines (including one 64 bit). Will this pose any problem or will I be required to do any manual set up because of this?

Reading of firmware updates here in the forums, at what point should I/do I check for the latest firmware update? And I guess more importantly, how do I check for them?

And lastly, I intend to add a dual-disc, RAID 1 NAS to my system and have it attached directly to the DIR-825. It will primarily be used for back-up and file sharing but I will most likely move into media streaming in the future. Any thoughts, recommendations or tips I should be aware of?

I'm sorry for being so long-winded but I want to make this transition go as smoothly as possible and the more I read, the more questions come to mind. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

1st

don't use CD

use IE and go to  http://192.168.0.1 to do the setup

You might want to disconnect from linksys,  open the box, use the cable that's in there, then use wired connection to setup

and moved it to desired spot.

Most importantly, if you are going to update firmware, use IE, and ALWAYS use wired connection

if you insist on using CD... then use it.. personally I think the CD is crap

2nd

if you setup static IP make note of it. also security settings.

3rd

not really

fimware's check new firmware option doesn't work so..go to

http://www.dlink.com/support/

and search for Dir-825 manually once every quarter(3 months)

Last question

again.. static IP
