Degraded Disk 1 AND no Login
« on: January 25, 2011, 10:46:15 AM »

Hello to all !!  New here but lurking around with my DNS-323 for about 4/5 years now...

This is an interesting saga... At least I think so!!??

I recently purchased 2 Seagate 2TB drives to replace the 2 Seagate 500gig drives I had in the unit.  I think before the drive upgrade I had updated the firmware to 1.09.  I also think this problem was developing before the 2TB's and the firmware update but I did not recognize it at that time....

After I formatted the new drives and set the RAID under ext2 I had several occurrences of drive 2 degraded and when in the menus I would only have one drive showing. In the RAID tab (I think) the other drive would be listed and have a capacity of 0.  I would reset/restart the unit and then do a manual rebuild as I would have both drives showing again but still degraded.  This would work for a short time after the rebuild then happen again.  I took both drives out and gave them a quick format in windows then inserted them backwards from the original order. I started having drive 1 degraded and then followed the procedure above to correct the situation.  I eventually returned drive 1 for a replacement as it appeared it was a bad drive, specifically I suspected the startup command (if there is such a thing) was not happening for this drive and it was failing to start when directed from the DNS.
For a time the replacement drive functioned OK and then the same problem started again!  And as of the other day I cannot access the DNS menus from the web prompt, either by the IP address or through My Network Places 'goweb' icon (the drive or network connection this link refers to is unavailable....etc...etc...) .  I have both Mac Book Pro and WinNT 'puters with the result the same on both.
Interesting to read of others problems in these areas..... To that end I can look to the firmware....BUT...my unit is somewhat old and the drive lights do not function properly anymore.  It seems to me, then, it is time to either buy a replacement unit and/or send this one in for repairs.
  Any insight would be appreciated!!

Oh, I put 2 Seagate BarracudaLP 2TB drives of the ST320005N4A1AS-RK variety in...

  Thanks for ANY help!!

Part II  --

I was finally able to access the login screen by going into my router (D-link DIR 655 I think) and looking at the IP assignments.  Interestingly enough, my DNS323 IP address had changed from the static IP I set back when to one assigned by the router??!!  I did not reset the DNS so this appears to be something it did on its own??
I am in the process of re-syncing and then checking if this continues??

You might not have saved your setting properly before.  Anyway you figured it out now see if you can move forward with changing settings and saving them etc.

good luck.
