DIR-825 in front of a DIR-655 Problems
« on: January 28, 2011, 05:36:36 PM »

I am having trouble with this set up.

I have a DIR-825 connected to my Motorola Surfboard, on a Comcast Cable, because of distance and signal I have used an ethernet line to run about 50 feet to a DIR-655, essentially using it as a wired range extender. (Typically using a Dell XPS M1530 with an Intel T9300 processor and an Intel 633 AGN adapter.)

I have followed all the book directions and updated all the firmware, and followed D-Links first pass at instructing me by email and failed. If I connect wirelessly to the 825 I can get out okay, etc. but if I connect the 655 and try to wirelessly connect to that, I can't get to the internet. It keeps saying my wireless adapter does not have a valid IP address.

The 825 has UNPN enabled and DHCP enabled, the 655 has them off.

Has anyone made this work and can you share your configuration?

Or does anyone have any configuration issues to suggest.

I have a setup that is the reverse of yours because 5GHz devices need to be closer to the AP.  I use static addressing instead of DHCP.  Are you connecting the cable to the a LAN port on the 655?

The other thing to look at would be your network adapter TCP settings.

No I'm connecting the cable from a LAN port on the 825 to the INTERNET port on the 655.

I don't know a way to list TCP settings but are the TCP 4 & 6 are set to obtain addreses automatically.

I have the 655 set with its own IP 192.168.0.2

I could switch the routers if you would be willing to send me your confg files.

Thanks

The routers need to be connected LAN to LAN.

The only WAN or internet port connected should be the 1st router to the cable modem.

The answer for configuring this type of network
might be included in:

Multi-NAT Router Networks - Configuration Details

http://www.grc.com/nat/nats.htm

The issue of combining gateways/routers in the same
LAN can be confusing because there is more than one way
to do it. Both of the basic answers are correct but the
details of configuration and the end result are very
different.

It always comes down to one essential question - do
I want a single subnet or would I prefer multiple (2
or more) subnets. Anytime you read an explanation for
combining gateways/routers in the same LAN - ask youself
if they are describing single subnet or multiple subnets.
Some very well written explanations do not include this
key piece of information. Don't get confused by these.

Hint: In GRCs explanation, Steve is teaching how to
setup multiple subnets.

:) Well I got it all working, but my 825 froze solid after putting the first part of the 2.05 firmware on it. So I installed the 655 as the main router whilr I tried to get the 825 to talk again. I'm not really sure how I got the 825 going (maybe it was the chicken I sacrificed) but once I did I wasn't going to uninstall the 655.

Speeds are as good as before, about 7500 kbps down & 2500 kbps up.

I'm sure there is more tuning to go, so I'll take a look at the link above. If there are other good resources to review I'd appreciate it.

Thanks
